Air quality in Durham Region
- Highway 401 & 407 traffic
- New-subdivision construction dust
- Lakeshore industry
- Farm & field dust
- Ragweed & tree pollen
- Wildfire smoke
Durham Region stretches from the Lake Ontario shoreline all the way north to Lake Simcoe, so the air in one corner can be quite different from the other. The southern tier – Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa and Clarington – lines up along Highway 401, one of the busiest truck routes in North America, and is crossed by the 407, 412 and 418. Lakeshore industry adds to the mix: auto assembly in Oshawa, a steel mill in Whitby, a cement plant near Bowmanville and two large nuclear generating stations along the waterfront.
Durham is also one of the fastest-growing parts of the GTA. New communities such as Seaton in Pickering, north Whitby and Brooklin, north Oshawa and Courtice are turning farmland into subdivisions, and construction dust drifts into nearby homes for years while those neighbourhoods fill in. Fine dust from new drywall and flooring also collects in brand-new ductwork, so new-build owners often find their first few filters turn grey quickly.
North of the Oak Ridges Moraine, in Uxbridge, Scugog and Brock, the air is cleaner but has its own challenges: field dust at planting and harvest, heavy ragweed and grass pollen in late summer, and wood smoke from stoves and fireplaces in winter. Like the rest of southern Ontario, the whole region has seen wildfire smoke from northern Ontario and Quebec push the Air Quality Health Index into the high-risk range in recent summers – a good reason to keep a spare MERV 13 filter on the shelf.
Durham Region climate, homes & HVAC systems
Durham's climate is classic southern Ontario: cold winters, warm and humid summers, and a long shoulder season. Lake Ontario softens temperatures a little along the shoreline, while the higher, more open land north of the moraine gets colder nights, more snow and stronger winds. Furnaces typically run from October to April, and central air keeps the fan moving through July and August, so filters work almost year-round.
Housing ranges widely. Older bungalows and storey-and-a-half homes in downtown Oshawa, Whitby and Bowmanville often have original ductwork and 1-inch filter slots, while the large subdivisions built from the 1980s onward in Ajax, Pickering and Courtice usually run mid- or high-efficiency gas furnaces with central air, and many newer homes add HRVs and 4- or 5-inch media cabinets. In the rural north you will find farmhouses heated by oil or propane furnaces, wood stoves, and seasonal cottages on Lake Scugog and Lake Simcoe that sit closed for months at a time.
MERV 11 for most homes, MERV 13 for new builds & smoke
MERV 11 is the sweet spot for Durham's mix of traffic dust, pollen and pet dander. Choose MERV 13 in a brand-new home during the first year of construction dust, during wildfire smoke events, or if anyone has asthma. Older furnaces in heritage homes may breathe easier on MERV 8.

- Spring: Change the filter as fields are worked and maple and birch pollen arrive in April.
- Summer: Run the AC with windows closed on smoke advisory days and check the filter after each event.
- Fall: Fit a fresh filter before Thanksgiving, when most Durham furnaces start cycling at night.
- Winter: Check monthly – north of the moraine, cold snaps keep furnaces running for days on end.
Which MERV rating is right for your Durham Region home?
MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) measures how well a filter captures particles of different sizes under the ASHRAE 52.2 test standard. Higher numbers catch smaller particles. Most residential furnaces in Canada run well on MERV 8 to MERV 13 – here is how to choose:
| Rating | What it captures | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| MERV 8 | Dust, lint, pollen, mould spores and larger particles (3–10 microns) | Budget-friendly everyday protection, rental units, new-build dust |
| MERV 11 | Everything MERV 8 does plus pet dander, fine dust and some smoke (1–3 microns) | Most family homes, pets, seasonal allergies |
| MERV 13 | Fine particles down to 0.3–1 micron, including much of the PM2.5 in wildfire smoke | Asthma, allergies, wildfire smoke, newborns and seniors |
Not sure? Read our complete MERV rating guide. If you are moving up to MERV 13 on an older furnace, a deeper 2-inch or 4-inch filter keeps airflow healthy.
Popular furnace filter sizes in Durham Region
These sizes cover most furnaces in Durham's suburbs. Many newer homes in Pickering, Whitby and Courtice have deep media cabinets that take 4-inch or 5-inch filters, while farmhouses and cottages often need special sizes.
How often to change your furnace filter in Durham Region
| Filter depth | Typical home | Pets, allergies or smoke |
|---|---|---|
| 1-inch | Every 1–3 months | Every 30–45 days |
| 2-inch | Every 3–4 months | Every 2 months |
| 4-inch | Every 6–9 months | Every 4–6 months |
| 5-inch | Every 9–12 months | Every 6 months |
In Durham Region, change more often during the first year in a new subdivision and in farm country at harvest time; cottages should get a fresh filter on opening weekend. See the full filter changing guide.

Durham Region air filter FAQ
What MERV rating is best for a Durham Region home?
MERV 11 suits most Durham homes. Go up to MERV 13 for allergies, asthma, wildfire smoke or a new build that is still shedding construction dust; very old furnaces may prefer MERV 8.
I just moved into a new subdivision in Durham. How often should I change my filter?
Check it monthly for the first year. Drywall and sanding dust from your own house and the homes still being built around you can clog a filter in a few weeks.
Do rural Durham homes with wood stoves need a special filter?
A pleated MERV 11 or MERV 13 filter on the furnace helps capture fine particles from wood smoke that drift through the house. It doesn't replace proper venting and chimney cleaning.
Does Durham Region get wildfire smoke?
Yes. Smoke from fires in northern Ontario and Quebec has blanketed the region several times in recent summers. Read our wildfire smoke guide and keep a MERV 13 filter ready.
Can you supply filters for a farm, barn or greenhouse in north Durham?
Yes. We make wire panel filters and media pads and rolls for ventilation fans and intake screens, plus standard furnace filters for the farmhouse.
Which Durham communities do you have local pages for?
We have pages for Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa, Clarington, Scugog, Uxbridge and Brock Township, each with local tips.
How much does shipping to Durham Region cost?
