Air quality in Regina

  • Wind-blown prairie dust
  • Wildfire smoke
  • Refinery & industrial emissions
  • Elm & poplar pollen
  • Spring street grit
  • Bone-dry winter air

Regina sits on one of the flattest stretches of prairie in Canada, and the wind rarely stops. With heavy clay soils and open farmland on every side, dry spells and harvest season send fine dust into the city, and when the snow melts, months of winter sand and gravel on Albert Street, Victoria Avenue, Lewvan Drive and the Ring Road turn into gritty spring dust. Homes in newer neighbourhoods on the city edge, such as Harbour Landing and The Greens on Gardiner, also see construction dust as development continues.

The city has a sizeable industrial base for its size. The Co-op Refinery Complex in the northeast and a steel pipe mill in the north end are major employers, and nearby neighbourhoods can notice odours and emissions on some days. Rail lines, grain handling and canola crushing add local dust, and potash mines lie within easy driving distance to the west.

Almost every tree in Regina was planted by hand, and today the city's elm canopy, along with poplars and green ash, makes spring pollen season noticeable, with grass and ragweed following in summer. Wildfire smoke from northern Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba has pushed Regina's AQHI into the high-risk range several times in recent summers – and fine smoke particles slip through basic fibreglass filters, which is why a pleated MERV 11 or MERV 13 filter makes such a difference.

Regina climate, homes & HVAC systems

Regina's climate is dry, sunny and extreme: winters are long and windy, with cold snaps below –30 °C and wind chills that feel far colder, while summers are hot and dry with frequent thunderstorms. Furnaces run from October into May, and central air conditioning is common for July and August heat. Very low winter humidity keeps dust airborne indoors and makes static and dry skin common.

The city's older neighbourhoods – Cathedral, Lakeview, Crescents, Albert Park and the Heritage area – have character homes and post-war bungalows, many with mid-efficiency or replaced high-efficiency gas furnaces and 1-inch filters. Suburbs like Whitmore Park, Uplands, Walsh Acres and Windsor Park have 1970s to 1990s homes, while newer areas like Harbour Landing, The Greens on Gardiner and Hawkstone have high-efficiency furnaces with 4- or 5-inch media cabinets, HRVs and furnace humidifiers.

MERV 11 for dust & pets, MERV 13 for smoke days

MERV 11 captures prairie dust, pollen and pet dander in most Regina homes without restricting airflow. Switch to MERV 13 during smoke events or if anyone has asthma, and try a carbon pleated filter if you live near industrial areas and notice odours.

Seasonal filter tips for Regina

  • Spring: Change the filter once the snow melts and street sand starts blowing.
  • Summer: Keep a MERV 13 on hand for wildfire smoke and run the AC with windows closed on smoky days.
  • Fall: Fit a fresh filter and humidifier pad before the furnace comes on in October.
  • Winter: Check monthly – long cold snaps keep the furnace running for days at a time.

Which MERV rating is right for your Regina home?

MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) measures how well a filter captures particles of different sizes under the ASHRAE 52.2 test standard. Higher numbers catch smaller particles. Most residential furnaces in Canada run well on MERV 8 to MERV 13 – here is how to choose:

Rating What it captures Best for
MERV 8 Dust, lint, pollen, mould spores and larger particles (3–10 microns) Budget-friendly everyday protection, rental units, new-build dust
MERV 11 Everything MERV 8 does plus pet dander, fine dust and some smoke (1–3 microns) Most family homes, pets, seasonal allergies
MERV 13 Fine particles down to 0.3–1 micron, including much of the PM2.5 in wildfire smoke Asthma, allergies, wildfire smoke, newborns and seniors

Not sure? Read our complete MERV rating guide. If you are moving up to MERV 13 on an older furnace, a deeper 2-inch or 4-inch filter keeps airflow healthy.

Popular furnace filter sizes in Regina

These are the most common furnace sizes in Regina homes. Many newer houses take 4-inch or 5-inch filters, and older units sometimes need a special size.

How to measure: the size printed on the filter frame (e.g. 16x25x1) is the nominal size; the real filter is usually about ½" smaller (15½ x 24½ x ¾). Order by the printed size, or measure your old filter and use our size search. Odd size? We build special and custom sizes to order.

How often to change your furnace filter in Regina

Filter depth Typical home Pets, allergies or smoke
1-inch Every 1–3 months Every 30–45 days
2-inch Every 3–4 months Every 2 months
4-inch Every 6–9 months Every 4–6 months
5-inch Every 9–12 months Every 6 months

In Regina, change filters more often during windy dry spells and smoke events, and check them monthly through the coldest part of winter. See the full filter changing guide.

Regina air filter FAQ

What MERV rating do Regina homes need?

MERV 11 is a strong all-round choice for Regina's dust and pollen. Use MERV 13 during wildfire smoke or if someone in the home has asthma, as long as your furnace is rated for it.

Why does my Regina furnace filter get dirty so fast?

Constant wind, dry clay soil and spring street sand load filters quickly, and very dry winter air keeps dust airborne. Check 1-inch filters monthly and replace them when they look grey.

Does Regina get wildfire smoke?

Yes. Smoke from fires in northern Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba has hazed the city in recent summers. Keep a spare MERV 13 filter and see our wildfire smoke guide.

Can a filter help with odours from industrial areas?

Standard pleated filters capture particles but not gases. A carbon pleated filter helps reduce odours in homes near industrial areas.

I have pets and dry winter air. What should I use?

MERV 11 traps pet dander and hair well. Replace it every 1–2 months with pets, and change your furnace humidifier pad each fall – see our pet owners' guide.

Do you supply filters for Regina businesses and schools?

Yes. We supply pleated, pocket and rigid filters in bulk for offices, schools, care homes and commercial buildings – see our bulk orders page.

How much does shipping to Regina cost?

Orders to Regina ship for $50 flat rate. Most orders arrive in 3–9 business days, with no customs or duties because everything ships from within Canada.

Can you make custom-size filters for my Regina home or building?

Yes. Because we manufacture in Brampton, we can build non-standard and custom sizes to order – usually within about 3 weeks. Use our custom filter form or email info@canadianairfilters.com with your dimensions and MERV rating.
