Air quality in Halifax

  • Sea fog & humidity
  • Port & ship emissions
  • Downtown construction
  • Wildfire smoke
  • Mould in older homes
  • Highway & bridge traffic

Halifax is built around one of the world's great natural harbours, and the harbour shapes its air. Container ships, cruise ships, naval vessels at CFB Halifax and work at the Halifax Shipyard all add marine engine exhaust, and the Tufts Cove generating station sits on the Dartmouth shore. Traffic funnels onto the Macdonald and MacKay bridges, the Bedford Highway and Highways 102, 111 and 118, while trucks serve the Burnside industrial park and the container terminals. Neighbourhoods near the waterfront and the main commuter routes see the most of it.

The city has also been in a long construction boom. New towers are rising downtown, in the North End, along Quinpool Road and in Dartmouth, and new subdivisions keep spreading through Bedford West, Sackville and the Hammonds Plains Road. That means fine construction dust in many neighbourhoods. Then there is wildfire: in 2023 the Tantallon fire destroyed many homes in Upper Tantallon and Hammonds Plains, and the whole city lived with smoke and evacuations for days.

Above all, Halifax is damp. Fog rolls in off the Atlantic, and spring and fall can bring weeks of drizzle. Many older homes in the South End, the North End and downtown Dartmouth have stone or brick foundations that let moisture in, and storms like Fiona in 2022 and the July 2023 flash floods in Bedford and Sackville left water in plenty of basements. Mould spores and musty air are the most common indoor air problems in the city.

Halifax climate, homes & HVAC systems

Halifax has a cool, humid maritime climate. Winters are milder than inland Canada but long, wet and windy, with constant freeze-thaw cycles and nor'easters that can dump snow one day and rain the next. Summers are warm and pleasant, though fog can keep the harbour cool while the suburbs bake. The heating season runs from October into May, and heat pumps now handle summer cooling and dehumidifying in many homes.

The housing stock is varied. The South End is full of large Victorian and Edwardian homes, the North End's Hydrostone district was rebuilt after the 1917 Halifax Explosion, and Dartmouth, Fairview and Spryfield have plenty of post-war bungalows and split-levels. Clayton Park and downtown have many apartments and condos, while Bedford, Sackville and Cole Harbour are suburban. Oil-fired furnaces and boilers are still common in older homes, heat pumps have spread quickly, and newer condos often use fan coils or in-suite heat pumps with non-standard filters.

MERV 11 for damp coastal air, MERV 13 for smoke and asthma

MERV 11 captures mould spores, pollen and dust while keeping airflow healthy for oil furnaces and heat pumps. Use MERV 13 during wildfire smoke, if you live near the port or a construction site, or if someone at home has asthma – as long as your system is rated for it.

Seasonal filter tips for Halifax

  • Spring: Foggy, damp weeks – change the filter if the basement smells musty.
  • Summer: Run your heat pump's dry mode on humid days and keep a spare MERV 13 for wildfire smoke.
  • Fall: Install a fresh filter before heating starts, and check it again after any hurricane-season storm.
  • Winter: Check monthly – the furnace or heat pump runs daily through the cold, wet months.

Which MERV rating is right for your Halifax home?

MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) measures how well a filter captures particles of different sizes under the ASHRAE 52.2 test standard. Higher numbers catch smaller particles. Most residential furnaces in Canada run well on MERV 8 to MERV 13 – here is how to choose:

Rating What it captures Best for
MERV 8 Dust, lint, pollen, mould spores and larger particles (3–10 microns) Budget-friendly everyday protection, rental units, new-build dust
MERV 11 Everything MERV 8 does plus pet dander, fine dust and some smoke (1–3 microns) Most family homes, pets, seasonal allergies
MERV 13 Fine particles down to 0.3–1 micron, including much of the PM2.5 in wildfire smoke Asthma, allergies, wildfire smoke, newborns and seniors

Not sure? Read our complete MERV rating guide. If you are moving up to MERV 13 on an older furnace, a deeper 2-inch or 4-inch filter keeps airflow healthy.

Popular furnace filter sizes in Halifax

These are common sizes for Halifax furnaces and ducted heat pumps. Condo fan coils and older oil furnaces often need special sizes – we build those in Brampton.

How to measure: the size printed on the filter frame (e.g. 16x25x1) is the nominal size; the real filter is usually about ½" smaller (15½ x 24½ x ¾). Order by the printed size, or measure your old filter and use our size search. Odd size? We build special and custom sizes to order.

How often to change your furnace filter in Halifax

Filter depth Typical home Pets, allergies or smoke
1-inch Every 1–3 months Every 30–45 days
2-inch Every 3–4 months Every 2 months
4-inch Every 6–9 months Every 4–6 months
5-inch Every 9–12 months Every 6 months

If your Halifax basement took on water in a storm or flood, replace the filter once it's dry and check it monthly for a while afterwards. See the full filter changing guide.

Air filters for Halifax businesses & property managers

Halifax is the commercial centre of Atlantic Canada. The QEII Health Sciences Centre and IWK Health, Dalhousie, Saint Mary's, Mount Saint Vincent and NSCAD, the navy and the shipyard, the port, provincial government offices, nursing homes, hotels, restaurants and a growing number of apartment and condo buildings depend on well-maintained ventilation, often in older buildings with tight mechanical rooms.

Property firms and contractors across the HRM order pleated filters by the case, pocket and V-bank filters for big air handlers, and HEPA filters for clinics and labs. Approved accounts get volume pricing and shipments planned around their change-out cycles.

Halifax air filter FAQ

What MERV rating do Halifax homes need?

Start with MERV 11 – it handles the spores and dust that come with Halifax's damp weather. Step up to MERV 13 for smoke events, homes near the port or construction, or anyone with asthma, if your system can take it.

Do ducted heat pumps in Halifax need more filter changes?

Yes. A ducted heat pump moves air through its filter for heating, cooling and dehumidifying, so it can load up faster than a furnace that only runs in winter. Check it monthly and replace 1-inch filters every 1–3 months.

What filter does my Halifax condo use?

Most newer condos use fan coil units or in-suite heat pumps with thin, often non-standard filters. Read the size on your current filter and search our site, or see our condo air quality guide.

My basement flooded – should I change my filter?

Yes. Once the space is dry and cleaned, install a new filter and check it monthly for a while, since mould spores and clean-up dust load filters quickly. A filter helps, but controlling moisture is what solves the problem.

Does Halifax get wildfire smoke?

Yes. The 2023 Tantallon fire brought heavy smoke and evacuations to the edge of the city. Keep a spare MERV 13 filter ready and see our wildfire smoke guide.

Do you ship to Dartmouth, Bedford and Sackville?

Yes. We ship to every address in the Halifax Regional Municipality, including Dartmouth, Bedford, Sackville, Cole Harbour and Fall River. The shipping cost is shown below and at checkout.

Yes. Because we manufacture in Brampton, we can build non-standard and custom sizes to order – usually within about 3 weeks. Use our custom filter form or email info@canadianairfilters.com with your dimensions and MERV rating.
