Air quality in Ajax

  • Highway 401 traffic
  • Lake Ontario breezes
  • Duffins Creek pollen
  • Pet dander
  • Wildfire smoke

Ajax is a lakeside town with a lot of green space – the waterfront trail, Rotary Park and the Duffins and Carruthers Creek valleys – but it also sits squarely on Highway 401, which cuts the town in half. Homes south of the highway and along Harwood Avenue and Salem Road feel the traffic most, and on hot, stagnant summer days ground-level ozone and fine particles can build up across the whole lakeshore.

On most days, though, the bigger indoor air issue in Ajax is the ordinary stuff of family life. It is largely a town of young families and multigenerational households, with lots of pets, kids and busy kitchens. Pet dander, cooking particles and household dust add up quickly, especially in winter when windows stay shut, and a good pleated filter is one of the easiest ways to keep it under control.

Spring brings heavy maple, poplar and willow pollen out of the creek valleys, and ragweed season runs from August into September. Smoke from wildfires in northern Ontario and Quebec has also reached Ajax in recent summers, hazing out the view of the lake – fine PM2.5 that passes straight through cheap fibreglass filters but is largely captured by MERV 13.

Ajax climate, homes & HVAC systems

Ajax has a lake-moderated climate: winters a touch milder and damper than inland Durham, summers warm and humid. Furnaces run from mid-fall to spring, and central air carries most homes through the summer, so the system fan – and the filter – are busy for most of the year.

Apart from the historic core around Pickering Village, most of Ajax was built from the 1970s onward, with large subdivisions added through the 1990s and 2000s in the north and east of town. That means plenty of two-storey homes with mid- or high-efficiency gas furnaces and central AC, many with 1-inch filter racks and some with 4- or 5-inch media cabinets. Newer townhouses and the condos near the waterfront and Harwood often have compact air handlers that take less common filter sizes.

MERV 11 for family homes, MERV 13 for allergies & smoke

MERV 11 strikes the right balance between capture and airflow for most Ajax homes with kids and pets. Upgrade to MERV 13 if anyone has asthma or allergies, or during smoke events. See our guide to indoor air for kids and seniors.

Seasonal filter tips for Ajax

  • Spring: Change your filter when the creek-valley trees start dropping pollen in April.
  • Summer: Close up and run the AC on smoke and smog advisory days.
  • Fall: Fit a new filter before the heating season and again if pets are shedding their summer coat.
  • Winter: Check monthly – busy houses with the windows shut load filters quickly.

Which MERV rating is right for your Ajax home?

MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) measures how well a filter captures particles of different sizes under the ASHRAE 52.2 test standard. Higher numbers catch smaller particles. Most residential furnaces in Canada run well on MERV 8 to MERV 13 – here is how to choose:

Rating What it captures Best for
MERV 8 Dust, lint, pollen, mould spores and larger particles (3–10 microns) Budget-friendly everyday protection, rental units, new-build dust
MERV 11 Everything MERV 8 does plus pet dander, fine dust and some smoke (1–3 microns) Most family homes, pets, seasonal allergies
MERV 13 Fine particles down to 0.3–1 micron, including much of the PM2.5 in wildfire smoke Asthma, allergies, wildfire smoke, newborns and seniors

Not sure? Read our complete MERV rating guide. If you are moving up to MERV 13 on an older furnace, a deeper 2-inch or 4-inch filter keeps airflow healthy.

Popular furnace filter sizes in Ajax

Most Ajax furnaces take a standard 1-inch filter, while many 2000s-era homes have 4-inch or 5-inch media cabinets. Townhouse and condo units may need special sizes.

How to measure: the size printed on the filter frame (e.g. 16x25x1) is the nominal size; the real filter is usually about ½" smaller (15½ x 24½ x ¾). Order by the printed size, or measure your old filter and use our size search. Odd size? We build special and custom sizes to order.

How often to change your furnace filter in Ajax

Filter depth Typical home Pets, allergies or smoke
1-inch Every 1–3 months Every 30–45 days
2-inch Every 3–4 months Every 2 months
4-inch Every 6–9 months Every 4–6 months
5-inch Every 9–12 months Every 6 months

Ajax households with dogs, cats or several family members under one roof should plan on changing 1-inch filters every 30–45 days. See the full filter changing guide.

Ajax air filter FAQ

What MERV rating is best for an Ajax home with kids and pets?

MERV 11 handles pet dander, dust and pollen well without straining your furnace. Choose MERV 13 if a family member has asthma or allergies.

How often should I change my furnace filter in Ajax?

Every 1–3 months for 1-inch filters, or every 30–45 days with pets. Deeper 4- and 5-inch filters usually last 6–12 months.

Do homes south of the 401 in Ajax need a better filter?

Homes near the highway see more fine traffic particles, so MERV 13 is a good upgrade if your furnace handles it. A carbon pleated filter also helps with exhaust odours.

Does Ajax get wildfire smoke?

Yes, smoke from northern Ontario and Quebec fires has reached Ajax in recent summers. Keep a spare MERV 13 filter and run the AC with windows closed on smoky days.

My Ajax townhouse filter is an odd size. Can you help?

Yes. Read the size printed on the frame or measure your old filter. If we don't stock it, we can make it to order.

Are washable filters a good idea in Ajax?

Washable filters work if you clean them regularly, but most pleated disposable filters capture more fine particles. For allergies, pleated MERV 11–13 is usually the better pick.

How much does shipping to Ajax cost?

Free local delivery covers addresses within 60 km of our Brampton facility, which includes much of Ajax. Choose “Free GTA Delivery” at checkout – if your address is just outside the zone, Ontario's $25 flat rate applies (free on orders over $2,500).

Can you make custom-size filters for my Ajax home or building?

Yes. Because we manufacture in Brampton, we can build non-standard and custom sizes to order – usually within about 3 weeks. Use our custom filter form or email info@canadianairfilters.com with your dimensions and MERV rating.
