Air quality in Halton Hills
- Credit River valley pollen
- Farm & field dust
- Highway 7 & 401 traffic
- Factory & rail corridors
- Wood smoke
- Wildfire smoke
Halton Hills is two towns and a countryside: Georgetown on the Credit River, Acton up on the Escarpment, and hamlets like Glen Williams, Limehouse, Terra Cotta and Norval scattered between farm fields and forest. The Credit River valley, Silver Creek, Terra Cotta and Hilton Falls conservation areas and the Bruce Trail give the town beautiful scenery – and a long pollen season, from tree pollen in April to grass in June and ragweed in late summer.
Farming is still a big part of the landscape, and dry, windy days during planting and harvest carry soil and crop dust across rural roads. Highway 7 runs through both Georgetown and Acton and gets busy with commuters and trucks heading to Brampton and Guelph, while the 401 crosses the south end near the Steeles Avenue industrial area. The rail line through Georgetown and Acton carries GO trains and freight.
Georgetown has a long manufacturing history, and industrial areas along Mountainview Road and Armstrong Avenue and the 401 corridor remain active. In winter, wood stoves in Glen Williams, Ballinafad and the rural areas add smoke on still nights, and in recent summers wildfire smoke from the north has drifted over the hills. A pleated furnace filter is the easiest defence against all of it.
Halton Hills climate, homes & HVAC systems
Away from the lake and partly on the Escarpment, Halton Hills is colder and snowier than Oakville or Burlington, especially in Acton. Furnaces usually run from early October into late April, and humid summers keep central air going through July and August.
Georgetown has everything from Victorian homes downtown and on Main Street to post-war bungalows, 1970s–90s subdivisions and newer homes in Georgetown South with high-efficiency furnaces and 4- or 5-inch filter cabinets. Acton's older homes reflect its days as a tannery town, and many rural properties rely on wells and propane, oil or wood heat.
MERV 11 for valley pollen, MERV 13 for allergies & smoke
MERV 11 handles pollen, farm dust and pet dander well in most Halton Hills homes. For allergy sufferers, wood-smoke neighbourhoods or smoke season, upgrade to MERV 13.

- Spring: Fresh filter as the Credit River valley greens up and tree pollen starts.
- Summer: Check monthly when the AC runs and ragweed appears along the fields.
- Fall: Change the filter after harvest and before the first frost on the Escarpment.
- Winter: If you burn wood, check the furnace filter every few weeks.
Which MERV rating is right for your Halton Hills home?
MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) measures how well a filter captures particles of different sizes under the ASHRAE 52.2 test standard. Higher numbers catch smaller particles. Most residential furnaces in Canada run well on MERV 8 to MERV 13 – here is how to choose:
| Rating | What it captures | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| MERV 8 | Dust, lint, pollen, mould spores and larger particles (3–10 microns) | Budget-friendly everyday protection, rental units, new-build dust |
| MERV 11 | Everything MERV 8 does plus pet dander, fine dust and some smoke (1–3 microns) | Most family homes, pets, seasonal allergies |
| MERV 13 | Fine particles down to 0.3–1 micron, including much of the PM2.5 in wildfire smoke | Asthma, allergies, wildfire smoke, newborns and seniors |
Not sure? Read our complete MERV rating guide. If you are moving up to MERV 13 on an older furnace, a deeper 2-inch or 4-inch filter keeps airflow healthy.
Popular furnace filter sizes in Halton Hills
Older Georgetown and Acton homes usually take a 1-inch filter, while newer subdivisions often have a 4-inch or 5-inch media cabinet. Odd sizes in century homes? See our special sizes.
How often to change your furnace filter in Halton Hills
| Filter depth | Typical home | Pets, allergies or smoke |
|---|---|---|
| 1-inch | Every 1–3 months | Every 30–45 days |
| 2-inch | Every 3–4 months | Every 2 months |
| 4-inch | Every 6–9 months | Every 4–6 months |
| 5-inch | Every 9–12 months | Every 6 months |
Rural Halton Hills homes near working fields should check filters more often in spring and fall, when planting and harvest stir up dust. See the full filter changing guide.

Halton Hills air filter FAQ
What MERV rating should I use in Georgetown or Acton?
MERV 11 is the best fit for most homes. Choose MERV 13 for asthma, allergies or during wildfire smoke.
Does living near farm fields affect indoor air?
Yes, especially on dry, windy days during planting and harvest. Keep windows closed and check your filter more often in those seasons.
My Glen Williams home heats with a wood stove too. What filter helps?
A MERV 13 furnace filter captures a good share of fine smoke particles while the fan runs. For lingering smells, a carbon pleated filter can help.
