Air quality in Uxbridge

  • Moraine forest & tree pollen
  • Gravel pit & aggregate dust
  • Horse farm hay & dust
  • Wood smoke
  • Wildfire smoke

Uxbridge is known as Canada's trail capital, and the township's forests, wetlands and rolling hills on the Oak Ridges Moraine are a big part of the appeal. They also make spring tough for allergy sufferers: maple, birch, poplar and pine pollen can coat cars and windowsills from April into June, followed by grass and hay pollen in early summer and ragweed in late summer.

The moraine's sand and gravel deposits have long been quarried, and aggregate pits and trucks along the regional roads add dust in some parts of the township. Horse farms and hobby farms are common around Goodwood, Zephyr and Leaskdale, bringing hay dust and barn dander, while gravel concession roads add more on dry summer days.

In winter, wood stoves and fireplaces are popular in town and in the country, and smoke can settle in the valleys on still, cold nights. Uxbridge has also seen wildfire smoke drift south from northern Ontario and Quebec in recent summers. A good pleated filter on your furnace keeps much of that fine dust and smoke out of your living space.

Uxbridge climate, homes & HVAC systems

Up on the moraine, Uxbridge is colder and snowier than the lakeshore, with a heating season that easily runs from late September to May and cool nights even in summer. Summers are warm but generally a bit less muggy than Toronto.

The town of Uxbridge has a heritage downtown along Brock Street with older brick homes, plus subdivisions built from the 1970s onward and a newer area in the south end, mostly on natural gas with central air. Rural Uxbridge has many century farmhouses and estate homes on wells, heated with propane or oil furnaces, wood stoves, geothermal or air-source heat pumps. Older systems in these homes often take less common filter sizes.

MERV 11 for pollen season, MERV 13 for allergies & smoke

MERV 11 traps the moraine's heavy tree and grass pollen without restricting airflow on older systems. If anyone in your home has allergies or asthma, or you burn wood, choose MERV 13. Our allergy season guide explains the timing.

Seasonal filter tips for Uxbridge

  • Spring: Fit a new filter in early April, before the maple and birch pollen peaks.
  • Summer: Change it again after hay season, and close up on smoke advisory days.
  • Fall: Replace your filter before the first frost – heating starts early on the moraine.
  • Winter: Check monthly if you burn wood or run a heat pump with long cycles.

Which MERV rating is right for your Uxbridge home?

MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) measures how well a filter captures particles of different sizes under the ASHRAE 52.2 test standard. Higher numbers catch smaller particles. Most residential furnaces in Canada run well on MERV 8 to MERV 13 – here is how to choose:

Rating What it captures Best for
MERV 8 Dust, lint, pollen, mould spores and larger particles (3–10 microns) Budget-friendly everyday protection, rental units, new-build dust
MERV 11 Everything MERV 8 does plus pet dander, fine dust and some smoke (1–3 microns) Most family homes, pets, seasonal allergies
MERV 13 Fine particles down to 0.3–1 micron, including much of the PM2.5 in wildfire smoke Asthma, allergies, wildfire smoke, newborns and seniors

Not sure? Read our complete MERV rating guide. If you are moving up to MERV 13 on an older furnace, a deeper 2-inch or 4-inch filter keeps airflow healthy.

Popular furnace filter sizes in Uxbridge

Most Uxbridge furnaces take 1-inch filters, while newer homes and heat pump air handlers may use 4-inch filters. Farmhouses often need special sizes.

How to measure: the size printed on the filter frame (e.g. 16x25x1) is the nominal size; the real filter is usually about ½" smaller (15½ x 24½ x ¾). Order by the printed size, or measure your old filter and use our size search. Odd size? We build special and custom sizes to order.

How often to change your furnace filter in Uxbridge

2-inch Every 3–4 months Every 2 months
4-inch Every 6–9 months Every 4–6 months
5-inch Every 9–12 months Every 6 months

In Uxbridge, plan on an extra filter change during spring pollen season and every month if you heat with wood. See the full filter changing guide.

Uxbridge air filter FAQ

What MERV rating is best for Uxbridge allergy season?

MERV 11 traps most pollen. If someone has allergies or asthma, MERV 13 captures even finer particles.

I heat with wood in Uxbridge. Will a furnace filter help?

Yes, a pleated MERV 11 or MERV 13 filter helps capture fine smoke particles that circulate through the ducts. Make sure your stove is properly vented and maintained.

How often should I change my filter on a horse farm or gravel road?

Check monthly. Hay, barn and road dust load filters much faster than in town.

What filter does a heat pump air handler use?

Many use standard 1-inch or 4-inch pleated filters. Read the size on your current filter and search our site, or ask us for a custom size.

Does Uxbridge get wildfire smoke?

Yes, smoke from northern fires has reached the moraine in recent summers. Keep a spare MERV 13 filter and see our wildfire smoke guide.

Are washable filters good for country homes?

Washable filters can work for dusty workshops, but for the house, pleated MERV 11–13 filters capture far more pollen and fine smoke.

How much does shipping to Uxbridge cost?
