Air quality in Windsor

  • Ambassador Bridge truck traffic
  • Cross-border industry
  • Summer smog & ozone
  • Heat & humidity
  • Ragweed & mould
  • Greenhouse & farm dust

Windsor faces Detroit across the Detroit River, and the Ambassador Bridge is one of the busiest commercial border crossings in North America. Thousands of transport trucks travel the Herb Gray Parkway, Huron Church Road and the 401 every day, and the new Gordie Howe International Bridge brings another major crossing to the west end. Neighbourhoods such as Sandwich, West Windsor and those along Huron Church feel that diesel traffic most.

Industry on both sides of the river also shapes local air. Windsor is the heart of Canada's auto sector, with assembly, engine and battery plants, tool-and-die shops and parts makers across the city and county, while steel, refining and other heavy industry sit just across the water in the Detroit area. On hot, still summer days, prevailing south-west winds can carry ozone and fine particles from the U.S. Midwest straight over Essex County, which is why Windsor has long had some of the highest smog levels in Ontario.

Essex County has the warmest climate and longest growing season in Ontario. Leamington and Kingsville have one of the largest concentrations of commercial greenhouses in North America, and the surrounding fields of tomatoes, corn and soybeans bring dust at planting and harvest. A long, humid season also means heavy ragweed in late summer and mould spores in damp basements.

Windsor climate, homes & HVAC systems

As Canada's southernmost city, Windsor has hot, humid summers – often among the most humid in the country – and the shortest, mildest winters in Ontario. Air conditioners start running in May and often don't shut off until late September, so the cooling season is just as important to your filter as the heating season. Basements and crawl spaces stay damp for months, and many homes run dehumidifiers alongside the AC.

Walkerville and Olde Sandwich Towne have some of the oldest homes in the region, from brick Victorians to early-1900s worker cottages, while Riverside, East Windsor and much of the west end are dominated by post-war bungalows and wartime houses with compact furnaces and 1-inch filter slots. Newer subdivisions in LaSalle, Tecumseh, Lakeshore and South Windsor usually have high-efficiency furnaces, central air and 4-inch media cabinets. Rural Essex homes may still use propane or oil.

MERV 13 near the border, MERV 11 elsewhere

Homes near Huron Church Road, the bridge corridor or industrial areas benefit from MERV 13 to catch finer traffic and smog particles. MERV 11 is a good balance for most of Windsor-Essex. Because the AC runs so long, a 4-inch filter means fewer changes.

Seasonal filter tips for Windsor

  • Spring: Install a fresh filter in early May – AC season starts sooner here than anywhere else in Ontario.
  • Summer: Check filters monthly while the AC runs and keep windows closed on smog advisory days.
  • Fall: Replace after the first frost ends ragweed season and before turning on the heat.
  • Winter: Winters are milder than most of Ontario, but still check the filter every two months.

Which MERV rating is right for your Windsor home?

MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) measures how well a filter captures particles of different sizes under the ASHRAE 52.2 test standard. Higher numbers catch smaller particles. Most residential furnaces in Canada run well on MERV 8 to MERV 13 – here is how to choose:

Rating What it captures Best for
MERV 8 Dust, lint, pollen, mould spores and larger particles (3–10 microns) Budget-friendly everyday protection, rental units, new-build dust
MERV 11 Everything MERV 8 does plus pet dander, fine dust and some smoke (1–3 microns) Most family homes, pets, seasonal allergies
MERV 13 Fine particles down to 0.3–1 micron, including much of the PM2.5 in wildfire smoke Asthma, allergies, wildfire smoke, newborns and seniors

Not sure? Read our complete MERV rating guide. If you are moving up to MERV 13 on an older furnace, a deeper 2-inch or 4-inch filter keeps airflow healthy.

Popular furnace filter sizes in Windsor

These sizes fit most Windsor-Essex furnaces and air handlers. Wartime houses and older Walkerville homes sometimes need non-standard sizes – we make them to order.

How to measure: the size printed on the filter frame (e.g. 16x25x1) is the nominal size; the real filter is usually about ½" smaller (15½ x 24½ x ¾). Order by the printed size, or measure your old filter and use our size search. Odd size? We build special and custom sizes to order.

How often to change your furnace filter in Windsor

Filter depth Typical home Pets, allergies or smoke
1-inch Every 1–3 months Every 30–45 days
2-inch Every 3–4 months Every 2 months
4-inch Every 6–9 months Every 4–6 months
5-inch Every 9–12 months Every 6 months

Because Windsor's AC season is so long, treat summer like a second heating season: check 1-inch filters monthly from June to September. See the full filter changing guide.

Windsor air filter FAQ

Will I pay customs or duties on my order?

No. Every filter is made and shipped from Brampton, Ontario, so orders to Windsor stay inside Canada – no customs, brokerage or duty charges.

What MERV rating is best for Windsor?

MERV 11 suits most homes. If you live near the Ambassador Bridge, Huron Church Road or industrial areas, or have allergies or asthma, MERV 13 captures finer particles.

Why is smog worse in Windsor than elsewhere in Ontario?

Windsor sits downwind of major industrial areas in Michigan and the U.S. Midwest and has heavy border truck traffic. Hot, humid summer days let ozone and fine particles build up, so a MERV 13 filter and closed windows help on advisory days.

How often should I change my filter with all the AC use?

Check 1-inch filters monthly in summer and replace every 1–3 months; 4-inch filters typically last 6–9 months here. See our filter changing guide.

My basement smells musty. Will a filter help?

A pleated filter captures mould spores circulating through your ducts, but it won't fix the moisture source. Run a dehumidifier in summer and consider a carbon pleated filter for lingering odours.

Do you supply Leamington and Kingsville greenhouses?

Yes. We supply pleated, panel and media pads and rolls for greenhouse air handling and make custom sizes to order. Request a bulk quote.

How much does shipping to Windsor cost?

Orders to Windsor ship for a $25 flat rate, and orders of $2,500 or more ship free. Most orders arrive in 3–9 business days.

Can you make custom-size filters for my Windsor home or building?

Yes. Because we manufacture in Brampton, we can build non-standard and custom sizes to order – usually within about 3 weeks. Use our custom filter form or email info@canadianairfilters.com with your dimensions and MERV rating.
