Air quality in New Brunswick

  • Wood stove smoke
  • Forest industry
  • Fundy fog & damp
  • Refinery & port emissions
  • Wildfire smoke
  • Tree pollen

New Brunswick is one of the most heavily forested provinces in Canada, and that forest touches almost every part of daily life – including the air. Wood heat is common, especially in rural areas, the Miramichi, the upper Saint John River valley and the Acadian Peninsula, and on cold, calm winter nights wood smoke can settle in river valleys and small towns. Sawmills and pulp and paper mills in places like Edmundston, Nackawic and Saint John add their own emissions and, at times, a distinctive odour.

The south coast has a different character. Fog rolls in off the Bay of Fundy for much of the spring and summer, keeping homes along the coast damp and making mould and mildew a common concern in older basements. Saint John is home to Canada's largest oil refinery and a busy industrial port, while Belledune on the Bay of Chaleur has a generating station and port of its own. Traffic on the Trans-Canada and Route 1 adds to the mix near the cities.

Smoke is a growing issue too. New Brunswick had its own forest fires in 2023, and smoke from the record fires in Quebec and Nova Scotia drifted over the province the same summer. Spring brings heavy pollen from birch, maple, poplar and alder, and late summer brings grass and weed pollen. For homes with a ducted system, a good pleated filter is the easiest way to keep that outside load from circulating indoors.

New Brunswick climate, homes & HVAC systems

New Brunswick's climate varies more than people expect. Inland areas like Fredericton, Woodstock and Edmundston have colder winters and warmer summers, while the Fundy coast stays cooler and foggier and the Northumberland Strait shore around Shediac has some of the warmest saltwater beaches in Atlantic Canada. Everywhere, winter is long and snowy, and the heating season usually runs from October to May.

Heating is a mix. Many New Brunswick homes were built with electric baseboards, and in the last decade ductless mini-splits and central heat pumps have spread quickly. Older homes may still have oil-fired forced-air furnaces, and wood or pellet stoves are common as primary or back-up heat outside the cities. Bungalows, split-entries and older two-storey farmhouses dominate, alongside newer subdivisions in Greater Moncton, Fredericton and the Saint John suburbs. Any ducted furnace, central heat pump or air handler needs a filter – and older oil furnaces often take odd sizes.

MERV 11 everyday, MERV 13 for wood smoke and wildfire season

For most New Brunswick homes, MERV 11 is the sweet spot: it traps the pollen, spores and household dust that matter without asking too much of an oil furnace or heat pump blower. Use MERV 13 during wildfire smoke, in areas with a lot of wood heat, or for anyone with asthma. If you have an older oil furnace with a weak blower, MERV 8 may be the safer pick – the owner's manual will say.

Seasonal filter tips for New Brunswick

  • Spring: Replace the filter once the snow is gone and the birch and alder start releasing pollen.
  • Summer: Run your heat pump's dry mode on foggy coastal days and keep a spare MERV 13 for smoke.
  • Fall: Change the filter before switching to heating, and have your oil furnace or stove serviced.
  • Winter: Check monthly through January and February, especially in homes that also burn wood.

Which MERV rating is right for your New Brunswick home?

MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) measures how well a filter captures particles of different sizes under the ASHRAE 52.2 test standard. Higher numbers catch smaller particles. Most residential furnaces in Canada run well on MERV 8 to MERV 13 – here is how to choose:

Rating What it captures Best for
MERV 8 Dust, lint, pollen, mould spores and larger particles (3–10 microns) Budget-friendly everyday protection, rental units, new-build dust
MERV 11 Everything MERV 8 does plus pet dander, fine dust and some smoke (1–3 microns) Most family homes, pets, seasonal allergies
MERV 13 Fine particles down to 0.3–1 micron, including much of the PM2.5 in wildfire smoke Asthma, allergies, wildfire smoke, newborns and seniors

Not sure? Read our complete MERV rating guide. If you are moving up to MERV 13 on an older furnace, a deeper 2-inch or 4-inch filter keeps airflow healthy.

Popular furnace filter sizes in New Brunswick

These sizes fit most New Brunswick furnaces and central heat pump air handlers. Older oil furnaces and air handlers in farmhouses and camps often need special sizes, which we build to order.

How to measure: the size printed on the filter frame (e.g. 16x25x1) is the nominal size; the real filter is usually about ½" smaller (15½ x 24½ x ¾). Order by the printed size, or measure your old filter and use our size search. Odd size? We build special and custom sizes to order.

How often to change your furnace filter in New Brunswick

Filter depth Typical home Pets, allergies or smoke
1-inch Every 1–3 months Every 30–45 days
2-inch Every 3–4 months Every 2 months
4-inch Every 6–9 months Every 4–6 months
5-inch Every 9–12 months Every 6 months

If your home burns wood or sits in a damp coastal area, check the filter monthly – both load filters faster than the schedule above. See the full filter changing guide.

New Brunswick air filter FAQ

What MERV rating is best for New Brunswick homes?

MERV 11 suits most homes with a ducted furnace or central heat pump. Use MERV 13 during wildfire smoke, in areas with a lot of wood heat, or if someone at home has asthma or allergies.

Do ductless mini-splits use these filters?

No. Ductless mini-splits have washable mesh screens in each indoor head – rinse them every few weeks. Central (ducted) heat pumps and furnaces use the pleated filters we sell.

Will a furnace filter remove radon?

No. Radon is a gas, and no furnace filter can remove it. Parts of New Brunswick have elevated radon levels, so test your home and use a proper mitigation system if needed. A filter handles particles such as dust, pollen and smoke.

Do you have filters for oil furnaces?

Yes. Oil furnaces with a blower take ordinary pleated filters, usually in a slot beside or below the blower. If the old filter's printed size has worn off, measure the opening – an odd size is no problem, since we can build it to order.

Can a filter help with wood stove smoke?

With forced air, a MERV 13 filter pulls a good share of the fine smoke out of circulation, but it doesn't replace a well-installed, well-maintained stove and chimney. Change the filter more often during heavy burning months.

Will I pay customs or duties on orders to New Brunswick?

No. Your filters travel from our Brampton plant to New Brunswick without ever crossing a border, so the price at checkout is the price you pay.

How much does shipping to New Brunswick cost?

Orders to New Brunswick ship for $40 flat rate. Most orders arrive in 3–9 business days, with no customs or duties because everything ships from within Canada.

Can you make custom-size filters for my New Brunswick home or building?

Yes. Because we manufacture in Brampton, we can build non-standard and custom sizes to order – usually within about 3 weeks. Use our custom filter form or email info@canadianairfilters.com with your dimensions and MERV rating.
