Air quality in Quebec City

  • Long heating season
  • Wood stove smoke
  • Port & industrial dust
  • Heritage renovation dust
  • Wildfire smoke
  • Spring grit & sand

Quebec City sits on a cliff above the narrowing Saint Lawrence, and its weather is famously wintry – it is one of the snowiest major cities in Canada. That long winter shapes indoor air more than anything else. Homes stay closed up from October to April, so household dust, cooking particles and pet dander keep recirculating, and the furnace or heat pump fan runs nearly nonstop. In the suburbs and countryside around the city – Charlesbourg, Stoneham, the Île d'Orléans, the Côte-de-Beaupré – wood stoves are still common, and their smoke can settle over valleys on still, frigid nights.

The lower town has an industrial side too. The Port of Quebec handles bulk cargo next to the Limoilou and Beauport neighbourhoods, where dust from port operations has long been a concern for residents, and a paper mill still operates along the Saint-Charles River. Across the river in Lévis, a large oil refinery and the busy Highway 20 corridor add to the regional mix, as do the Autoroute Félix-Leclerc, the Laurentienne and the Henri-IV through the city itself.

When the snow finally melts, months of road sand and grit dry out and blow around, which is why spring can be surprisingly dusty here. Tree pollen follows quickly, and in summer, smoke from boreal wildfires to the north – as in 2023 – can drift over the city. A good pleated filter is the simplest way to keep all of that out of your living space.

Quebec City climate, homes & HVAC systems

Quebec City has a cold, snowy humid continental climate, with winters that start earlier and last longer than in Montreal and short, pleasant summers that can still get humid near the river. Heating dominates the year, so filters do most of their work between October and April, and summer cooling is lighter but growing as more households add heat pumps.

The housing stock spans four centuries. Inside the walls of Old Quebec and in Saint-Jean-Baptiste and Saint-Roch, stone and brick row houses have been retrofitted with ducted heat pumps or small air handlers, often squeezed into tight spaces with non-standard filter slots. Sainte-Foy, Charlesbourg and Beauport are full of post-war bungalows and split-levels with electric or dual-energy forced-air systems, while newer subdivisions in Lebourgneuf, Val-Bélair and Lévis feature tight, modern homes with heat pumps and air exchangers that need regular filter changes.

MERV 11 through the long winter, MERV 13 for smoke and renovations

MERV 11 handles everyday dust and dander through Quebec City's long heating season. Use MERV 13 if you live near wood smoke, during wildfire season or while renovating a heritage home. A deeper 4-inch filter holds more dust and lasts longer between changes in winter.

Seasonal filter tips for Quebec City

  • Spring: Replace the winter filter once the snowbanks melt and the dried road grit starts blowing around.
  • Summer: Keep a spare MERV 13 for boreal wildfire smoke and open windows only on clear days.
  • Fall: Install a fresh filter early – heating often starts here before the end of September.
  • Winter: Check monthly from November to March, and more often if wood stoves are burning nearby.

Which MERV rating is right for your Quebec City home?

MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) measures how well a filter captures particles of different sizes under the ASHRAE 52.2 test standard. Higher numbers catch smaller particles. Most residential furnaces in Canada run well on MERV 8 to MERV 13 – here is how to choose:

Rating What it captures Best for
MERV 8 Dust, lint, pollen, mould spores and larger particles (3–10 microns) Budget-friendly everyday protection, rental units, new-build dust
MERV 11 Everything MERV 8 does plus pet dander, fine dust and some smoke (1–3 microns) Most family homes, pets, seasonal allergies
MERV 13 Fine particles down to 0.3–1 micron, including much of the PM2.5 in wildfire smoke Asthma, allergies, wildfire smoke, newborns and seniors

Not sure? Read our complete MERV rating guide. If you are moving up to MERV 13 on an older furnace, a deeper 2-inch or 4-inch filter keeps airflow healthy.

Popular furnace filter sizes in Quebec City

These sizes fit most Quebec City furnaces and air handlers. Retrofits in Old Quebec and older row houses often need special sizes, and many electric furnaces use 5-inch media filters.

How to measure: the size printed on the filter frame (e.g. 16x25x1) is the nominal size; the real filter is usually about ½" smaller (15½ x 24½ x ¾). Order by the printed size, or measure your old filter and use our size search. Odd size? We build special and custom sizes to order.

How often to change your furnace filter in Quebec City

Filter depth Typical home Pets, allergies or smoke
1-inch Every 1–3 months Every 30–45 days
2-inch Every 3–4 months Every 2 months
4-inch Every 6–9 months Every 4–6 months
5-inch Every 9–12 months Every 6 months

With seven months of heating, Quebec City filters work harder than average – plan on changing 1-inch filters at least every two months through the winter. See the full filter changing guide.

Quebec City air filter FAQ

How often should I change my filter during a Quebec City winter?

Check 1-inch filters monthly through the heating season and replace them every 1–2 months; 4- and 5-inch media filters usually last 6–9 months here. Homes with pets or wood stoves nearby should change more often.

Can you make filters for older homes in Old Quebec?

Yes. Many heritage buildings have retrofitted heat pumps or air handlers with non-standard filter slots. Measure the slot or the old filter and order the matching size – we build custom sizes in our own plant.

Does a furnace filter help with wood stove smoke?

A MERV 11 or MERV 13 filter captures a good share of the fine smoke particles that get indoors, but it doesn't replace a properly installed and maintained stove. A portable HEPA purifier in bedrooms adds extra protection.

Do air exchangers need filters too?

Yes. Most modern Quebec homes have an air exchanger (HRV or ERV) with its own filters, usually washable or simple panel filters. Clean or replace them every few months in addition to your furnace or heat pump filter.

What filter should I use while renovating?

Plaster and masonry dust from older homes loads filters very quickly. Use MERV 13, check it every couple of weeks during the work, and seal off return vents near the work area if you can.

Does Quebec City get wildfire smoke?

Yes, at times. Smoke from boreal fires to the north reached the city during the 2023 fire season. Keep a spare MERV 13 filter ready and see our wildfire smoke guide.

How much does shipping to Quebec City cost?
