Air quality in Whitby
- Highway 401 & 412
- Lakeshore industry
- Brooklin construction dust
- Lynde Shores pollen
- Pet dander
- Wildfire smoke
Whitby runs from Port Whitby harbour and the Lynde Shores marshes on Lake Ontario, up past the 401, through the old downtown at Brock and Dundas, and north to the village of Brooklin and the farmland beyond the 407. The 401 and the north–south Highway 412 carry heavy traffic, and the industrial lands south of the 401 – including a steel mini-mill near the harbour – add their own emissions on the lakeshore side of town.
The north end tells a different story. Brooklin and the subdivisions around Taunton Road and Highway 7 have grown quickly, and new phases are still being built on what were farm fields not long ago. That means seasons of construction dust for nearby residents and plenty of drywall dust in brand-new ductwork. The surrounding farms add field dust at planting and harvest.
Pollen is the other big one: the marshes and creek valleys along Lynde Creek and Pringle Creek fill with tree pollen in spring, and ragweed peaks in late summer. Whitby has also seen smoke from northern Ontario and Quebec wildfires in recent summers. A pleated MERV 11 or MERV 13 filter in your furnace helps keep all of this from settling indoors.
Whitby climate, homes & HVAC systems
Whitby's climate is typical of the Durham lakeshore: cold, snowy winters that are a little milder near the water and colder in Brooklin, and warm, humid summers. Heating season runs from October to April and central air takes over in summer, so filters are in use for most of the year.
Whitby's older streets around the downtown and Port Whitby have century homes and post-war bungalows, often with retrofitted ducts and 1-inch filters. Neighbourhoods like Rolling Acres, Pringle Creek, Blue Grass Meadows and Williamsburg were mostly built from the 1980s to the 2000s and run gas furnaces with central AC, while the newest homes in Brooklin and west Whitby frequently add HRVs and 4- or 5-inch media filters. Rural properties north of Brooklin may heat with propane or oil.
MERV 11 everyday, MERV 13 for pets, allergies & smoke
MERV 11 captures dander, dust and pollen well in most Whitby homes. Step up to MERV 13 for asthma, multiple pets, wildfire smoke or a new Brooklin build near active construction. Pet owners can find more tips in our pet owners' filter guide.

- Spring: Change the filter as Lynde Shores and the creek valleys bloom in April and May.
- Summer: On smoke advisory days, close windows and let the AC recirculate through a MERV 13.
- Fall: Replace your filter before the furnace starts and before the dog's winter coat comes in.
- Winter: Check monthly, especially in Brooklin where it runs colder than the lakeshore.
Which MERV rating is right for your Whitby home?
MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) measures how well a filter captures particles of different sizes under the ASHRAE 52.2 test standard. Higher numbers catch smaller particles. Most residential furnaces in Canada run well on MERV 8 to MERV 13 – here is how to choose:
| Rating | What it captures | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| MERV 8 | Dust, lint, pollen, mould spores and larger particles (3–10 microns) | Budget-friendly everyday protection, rental units, new-build dust |
| MERV 11 | Everything MERV 8 does plus pet dander, fine dust and some smoke (1–3 microns) | Most family homes, pets, seasonal allergies |
| MERV 13 | Fine particles down to 0.3–1 micron, including much of the PM2.5 in wildfire smoke | Asthma, allergies, wildfire smoke, newborns and seniors |
Not sure? Read our complete MERV rating guide. If you are moving up to MERV 13 on an older furnace, a deeper 2-inch or 4-inch filter keeps airflow healthy.
Popular furnace filter sizes in Whitby
Most Whitby furnaces take 1-inch filters, while many newer homes in Brooklin and west Whitby use 4-inch or 5-inch media filters. Century homes downtown sometimes need special sizes.
How often to change your furnace filter in Whitby
| Filter depth | Typical home | Pets, allergies or smoke |
|---|---|---|
| 1-inch | Every 1–3 months | Every 30–45 days |
| 2-inch | Every 3–4 months | Every 2 months |
| 4-inch | Every 6–9 months | Every 4–6 months |
| 5-inch | Every 9–12 months | Every 6 months |
Whitby homes with pets or a construction site nearby should check 1-inch filters every month and change them as soon as they look grey. See the full filter changing guide.

Whitby air filter FAQ
What MERV rating should I use in my Whitby home?
MERV 11 is a great all-round choice. Choose MERV 13 for allergies, asthma, wildfire smoke or several pets.
My new Brooklin home's filter gets dirty fast. Is that normal?
Yes. New houses shed construction dust into the ductwork for months, and nearby lots are often still being built. Check the filter monthly during the first year.
How often should I change my furnace filter in Whitby?
Every 1–3 months for 1-inch filters and every 6–12 months for 4- or 5-inch filters, with more frequent checks for pets, smoke or construction.
Does Whitby get wildfire smoke?
Yes – smoke from fires in northern Ontario and Quebec has reached Whitby in recent summers. Keep a MERV 13 filter ready and see our wildfire smoke guide.
Which filter is best with dogs and cats in Whitby?
A pleated MERV 11 or MERV 13 filter traps pet dander well. If odour is a problem, try a carbon pleated filter.
Can a better filter help if I live near the 401 or the lakeshore industrial area?
Yes. MERV 13 captures a large share of fine particles from traffic and industry. It doesn't remove gases, so pair it with a carbon filter if you notice odours.
How much does shipping to Whitby cost?
