Air quality in Aurora

  • Oak Ridges Moraine pollen
  • Yonge & Wellington traffic
  • New subdivision construction
  • Pet dander
  • Mould in damp basements
  • Wildfire smoke

Aurora sits on the Oak Ridges Moraine, a ridge of forests, wetlands and headwater streams that crosses the middle of York Region. Natural areas like Sheppard's Bush, the Aurora Arboretum and the trails along the Holland River tributaries make the town green and leafy – and give it a strong pollen season, with maple, birch and oak in spring, grasses in early summer and ragweed along open fields into September.

Yonge Street and Wellington Street are the main routes through town and carry steady commuter traffic, and Highway 404 runs just to the east. New subdivisions in the north-east and on Aurora's edges have added years of construction dust, and on still summer days fine particles and ozone can build up across northern York Region. In recent summers, smoke from wildfires in northern Ontario and Quebec has also hazed Aurora's skies.

Indoors, Aurora's mix of tight new builds and older heritage homes each bring their own challenges. Well-sealed newer houses rely on an HRV and the furnace fan to move air, so a clogged filter quickly affects comfort, while older homes let in more outdoor dust and pollen through gaps around windows and doors. Either way, the furnace filter is doing most of the work of keeping that air clean for your family and pets.

Aurora climate, homes & HVAC systems

Up on the moraine, Aurora has cold, snowy winters and a heating season that runs from October into April, while summers are warm and humid enough for most homes to run central air. Basements in lower-lying areas near the creeks can stay damp, which is worth watching for mould.

Aurora's housing includes heritage homes on Wellington and Temperance Streets, 1970s–1990s family neighbourhoods like Aurora Heights and Aurora Highlands that usually take 1-inch filters, and newer areas such as Bayview Wellington, Aurora Grove and the Hills of St. Andrew where high-efficiency furnaces with 4- or 5-inch media cabinets are common. Plenty of Aurora households have dogs and cats too.

MERV 11 for pets & pollen, MERV 13 for allergies & smoke

MERV 11 captures pet dander, moraine pollen and household dust in most Aurora homes. Choose MERV 13 if anyone has asthma or allergies, or during wildfire smoke events. Our pet owner's guide has more tips.

Seasonal filter tips for Aurora

  • Spring: Install a fresh filter in April before tree pollen peaks around Sheppard's Bush.
  • Summer: Check monthly – shedding pets and long AC runs load filters quickly.
  • Fall: Change your filter before the furnace starts in October.
  • Winter: Check monthly during cold snaps when the furnace fan barely stops.

Which MERV rating is right for your Aurora home?

MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) measures how well a filter captures particles of different sizes under the ASHRAE 52.2 test standard. Higher numbers catch smaller particles. Most residential furnaces in Canada run well on MERV 8 to MERV 13 – here is how to choose:

Rating What it captures Best for
MERV 8 Dust, lint, pollen, mould spores and larger particles (3–10 microns) Budget-friendly everyday protection, rental units, new-build dust
MERV 11 Everything MERV 8 does plus pet dander, fine dust and some smoke (1–3 microns) Most family homes, pets, seasonal allergies
MERV 13 Fine particles down to 0.3–1 micron, including much of the PM2.5 in wildfire smoke Asthma, allergies, wildfire smoke, newborns and seniors

Not sure? Read our complete MERV rating guide. If you are moving up to MERV 13 on an older furnace, a deeper 2-inch or 4-inch filter keeps airflow healthy.

Popular furnace filter sizes in Aurora

These sizes cover most Aurora furnaces. Heritage homes with converted systems sometimes need special sizes, which we make in Brampton.

How to measure: the size printed on the filter frame (e.g. 16x25x1) is the nominal size; the real filter is usually about ½" smaller (15½ x 24½ x ¾). Order by the printed size, or measure your old filter and use our size search. Odd size? We build special and custom sizes to order.

How often to change your furnace filter in Aurora

2-inch Every 3–4 months Every 2 months
4-inch Every 6–9 months Every 4–6 months

In Aurora, homes with pets should check 1-inch filters every 30–45 days, and more often during spring pollen season. See the full filter changing guide.

Aurora air filter FAQ

What filter is best for Aurora homes with pets?

A MERV 11 filter captures pet dander and fur well without restricting airflow. Check it every 30–45 days, or use a 4- or 5-inch filter if your furnace has a media cabinet.

Is pollen bad in Aurora?

Aurora's moraine forests and fields produce heavy tree and grass pollen from April to July. A fresh MERV 11 or 13 filter at the start of the season helps keep it out.

Can a filter help with a damp basement?

A pleated filter captures many airborne mould spores, but it won't reduce humidity. Use a dehumidifier in damp basements and keep the filter changed on schedule.

Is delivery free to Aurora?

Yes – Aurora is inside our free GTA delivery zone. You can also pick up for free at our factory in Brampton.

How often should I change my furnace filter in Aurora?
