Air quality in Pickering
- Highway 401 corridor
- Seaton construction dust
- Lakeshore humidity
- Rouge Valley pollen
- Wildfire smoke
- Farm dust in the north
Pickering sits right where Toronto ends and Durham Region begins, with the Rouge River and Rouge National Urban Park on its western edge and Highway 401 running the full width of the south end. The 401 carries a constant stream of trucks between Toronto and eastern Ontario, and homes in Bay Ridges, West Shore and around Pickering Town Centre are close enough to feel it on hot, still days when traffic exhaust and ozone build up along the lakeshore.
North of the 407, Pickering is changing fast. The new community of Seaton is being built on former farmland, and Duffin Heights and the area around Brock Road have filled in quickly. Grading, paving and home building put a lot of fine dust in the air, and new homes carry their own drywall and sawdust into the ducts for the first year or two. Further north, the hamlets of Claremont, Greenwood and Brougham are still surrounded by fields, where planting, harvest and gravel roads add soil dust.
The Rouge Valley, Duffins Creek and Frenchman's Bay give Pickering plenty of green space, but also plenty of tree pollen in spring and ragweed in late summer. And, like the rest of the GTA, Pickering has seen wildfire smoke from northern Ontario and Quebec drift in and turn the sky hazy over the lake. A pleated MERV 11 or MERV 13 filter traps far more of these fine particles than a basic fibreglass filter.
Pickering climate, homes & HVAC systems
Lake Ontario keeps Pickering's south end slightly milder and more humid than the north, but winters are still cold enough that furnaces run steadily from late October to April, and humid summers keep central air going through July and August. Damp air off Frenchman's Bay and the lake can also mean basement humidity and musty odours, so running the furnace fan with a good filter helps keep air moving.
Pickering's housing has three main eras: 1960s–70s bungalows, backsplits and townhouses in Bay Ridges, Rosebank and Dunbarton, often with older 1-inch filter racks; larger 1980s–2000s family homes in Amberlea, Highbush, Brock Ridge and Liverpool with mid- or high-efficiency gas furnaces; and brand-new builds in Duffin Heights and Seaton with high-efficiency furnaces, HRVs and frequently a 4- or 5-inch media cabinet. Stacked townhomes and the newer condos near the City Centre use smaller air handlers or heat pumps with their own, sometimes unusual, filter sizes.
MERV 11 for most homes, MERV 13 in Seaton & on smoke days
MERV 11 is the right everyday choice for Pickering's mix of highway dust, pollen and pets. Choose MERV 13 if you live in a new build near active construction, for wildfire smoke, or if anyone at home has asthma. Basement odours? A carbon pleated filter helps.

- Spring: Swap filters as the Rouge Valley trees bloom and construction ramps up again in Seaton.
- Summer: Keep windows closed on smog and smoke days and let the AC filter the air.
- Fall: Put in a fresh filter in October before the furnace runs overnight.
- Winter: Check every month – the furnace fan runs hard through January and February.
Which MERV rating is right for your Pickering home?
MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) measures how well a filter captures particles of different sizes under the ASHRAE 52.2 test standard. Higher numbers catch smaller particles. Most residential furnaces in Canada run well on MERV 8 to MERV 13 – here is how to choose:
| Rating | What it captures | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| MERV 8 | Dust, lint, pollen, mould spores and larger particles (3–10 microns) | Budget-friendly everyday protection, rental units, new-build dust |
| MERV 11 | Everything MERV 8 does plus pet dander, fine dust and some smoke (1–3 microns) | Most family homes, pets, seasonal allergies |
| MERV 13 | Fine particles down to 0.3–1 micron, including much of the PM2.5 in wildfire smoke | Asthma, allergies, wildfire smoke, newborns and seniors |
Not sure? Read our complete MERV rating guide. If you are moving up to MERV 13 on an older furnace, a deeper 2-inch or 4-inch filter keeps airflow healthy.
Popular furnace filter sizes in Pickering
Older Pickering homes mostly take 1-inch filters, while many new builds in Duffin Heights and Seaton use 5-inch media filters. Townhouse air handlers and condo units may need special sizes.
How often to change your furnace filter in Pickering
| Filter depth | Typical home | Pets, allergies or smoke |
|---|---|---|
| 1-inch | Every 1–3 months | Every 30–45 days |
| 2-inch | Every 3–4 months | Every 2 months |
| 4-inch | Every 6–9 months | Every 4–6 months |
| 5-inch | Every 9–12 months | Every 6 months |
If you live next to an active building site in Seaton or north Pickering, check your filter every few weeks until the street is finished. See the full filter changing guide.

Pickering air filter FAQ
What MERV rating should I use in Pickering?
MERV 11 works for most Pickering homes. Use MERV 13 for allergies, asthma, wildfire smoke or a new home near ongoing construction.
I just moved into Seaton. Why does my filter get dirty so fast?
New homes shed drywall and sawdust into the ducts, and neighbouring lots are still being built. Check your filter monthly for the first year and change it whenever it looks grey.
Do Bay Ridges homes near the lake need a different filter?
Not a different size, but lakeside homes often have more humidity and basement odour. A pleated MERV 11 or a carbon filter plus a dehumidifier makes a noticeable difference.
Does Pickering get wildfire smoke?
Yes, smoke from northern Ontario and Quebec fires has reached Pickering in recent summers. Keep a MERV 13 filter on hand and see our wildfire smoke guide.
What filter does a Pickering townhouse or condo use?
Many stacked townhouses and condos have compact air handlers or heat pumps with thinner, less common sizes. Read the size printed on your old filter's frame and search our site – we can make any size we don't stock.
Can a better filter help with traffic pollution from the 401?
A MERV 13 filter captures a large share of fine particles from exhaust. For odours and fumes, add a carbon pleated filter.
How much does shipping to Pickering cost?
Free local delivery covers addresses within 60 km of our Brampton facility, which includes much of Pickering. Choose “Free GTA Delivery” at checkout – if your address is just outside the zone, Ontario's $25 flat rate applies (free on orders over $2,500).

Yes. Because we manufacture in Brampton, we can build non-standard and custom sizes to order – usually within about 3 weeks. Use our custom filter form or email info@canadianairfilters.com with your dimensions and MERV rating.
