Air quality in Peel Region
- Pearson airport & freight traffic
- 400-series highways
- Warehouse & industrial dust
- New-subdivision construction
- Gravel pits & farm fields
- Wildfire smoke
Peel Region packs a lot into one map: Toronto Pearson International Airport, some of the largest warehouse and distribution districts in Canada, and the 401, 403, 407, 410, 427 and QEW all carrying heavy truck traffic. Mississauga and south Brampton sit in the middle of that freight network, so diesel exhaust, brake and tire dust and fine road grit are a daily part of the air for hundreds of thousands of households.
Growth adds its own load. Few regions in Canada have built as many new homes as Peel over the past few decades, and fresh subdivisions are still going up in north Brampton, Mayfield West, Bolton and the edges of Mississauga. Grading and drywall dust drift well beyond each site, while tower construction along Hurontario keeps Mississauga's City Centre busy. In summer, warm, stagnant air can trap ground-level ozone and fine particles across the south of the region, and smoke from wildfires in northern Ontario, Quebec and the West has pushed Peel's air quality into the poor range in recent years.
Head north and the picture changes. Caledon is mostly farmland, forest and countryside along the Niagara Escarpment and the Oak Ridges Moraine, with gravel pits, worked fields and gravel roads that throw up dust in dry weather. Spring brings heavy tree pollen from the Credit River and Humber River valleys, followed by grasses and late-summer ragweed. Rural homes also deal with wood smoke on cold, calm nights. Whether your air is shaped by the airport or the escarpment, a good pleated furnace filter is the simplest way to keep it out of your living room.
Peel Region climate, homes & HVAC systems
Peel spans quite a range of climate for one region. The lakeshore in south Mississauga is moderated by Lake Ontario, with milder, damper winters and humid summers. Inland Brampton runs a little colder in winter and hotter in summer, and the higher ground of Caledon – up on the escarpment and moraine – gets noticeably more snow and colder nights. Across the region, furnaces work hard from November to March, and central air runs through the humid weeks of summer.
Housing is just as varied. South Peel has 1960s–1980s bungalows, backsplits and townhouses in places like Bramalea, Applewood and Malton, many with 1-inch filter slots on replacement furnaces. The large 1990s–2010s suburbs of Meadowvale, Churchill Meadows, Springdale and Mount Pleasant often have high-efficiency furnaces with 4- or 5-inch media cabinets and HRVs, and Mississauga's condo towers rely on fan coils and in-suite heat pumps. In rural Caledon you will find propane and oil furnaces, heat pumps, wood stoves and older farmhouses with retrofitted ductwork.
MERV 11 for most Peel homes, MERV 13 near highways & smoke
MERV 11 is the sweet spot for most Peel households – it handles pollen, construction dust and pet dander without straining older furnaces. Homes near Pearson, the 401 or 410, or anyone with asthma or allergies, should step up to MERV 13, ideally in a 4- or 5-inch depth. Rural Caledon homes with wood stoves benefit from MERV 13 in winter.

- Spring: Change your filter in April as the Credit and Humber valley trees release pollen.
- Summer: Check monthly during long AC stretches and keep a MERV 13 on hand for wildfire smoke days.
- Fall: Install a fresh filter before the furnace starts – Caledon's high ground cools down first.
- Winter: Check monthly through January and February, and more often if you burn wood.
Which MERV rating is right for your Peel Region home?
MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) measures how well a filter captures particles of different sizes under the ASHRAE 52.2 test standard. Higher numbers catch smaller particles. Most residential furnaces in Canada run well on MERV 8 to MERV 13 – here is how to choose:
| Rating | What it captures | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| MERV 8 | Dust, lint, pollen, mould spores and larger particles (3–10 microns) | Budget-friendly everyday protection, rental units, new-build dust |
| MERV 11 | Everything MERV 8 does plus pet dander, fine dust and some smoke (1–3 microns) | Most family homes, pets, seasonal allergies |
| MERV 13 | Fine particles down to 0.3–1 micron, including much of the PM2.5 in wildfire smoke | Asthma, allergies, wildfire smoke, newborns and seniors |
Not sure? Read our complete MERV rating guide. If you are moving up to MERV 13 on an older furnace, a deeper 2-inch or 4-inch filter keeps airflow healthy.
Popular furnace filter sizes in Peel Region
These sizes cover most furnaces in Peel. Newer suburban homes often use 4-inch or 5-inch media filters, while condo fan coils and older farmhouse systems in Caledon may need special sizes – which we make in Brampton.
How often to change your furnace filter in Peel Region
| Filter depth | Typical home | Pets, allergies or smoke |
|---|---|---|
| 1-inch | Every 1–3 months | Every 30–45 days |
| 2-inch | Every 3–4 months | Every 2 months |
| 4-inch | Every 6–9 months | Every 4–6 months |
| 5-inch | Every 9–12 months | Every 6 months |

What MERV rating is best for Peel homes?
MERV 11 suits most homes in Brampton, Mississauga and Caledon. Choose MERV 13 if you live near Pearson or a major highway, burn wood, or anyone at home has asthma or allergies.
My new Peel home is very dusty – is that normal?
Yes, new subdivisions stay dusty while construction continues nearby. Change a 1-inch filter monthly for the first few months, or use a deeper 4-inch filter that holds more dust.
I live in rural Caledon with a propane furnace – do I need a special filter?
Most propane and oil furnaces use the same standard sizes as gas furnaces. Measure your existing filter; if it is an unusual size for an older farmhouse system, we can build a special size.
Can a furnace filter help with airport and highway pollution?
A MERV 13 filter captures a large share of the fine particles from traffic and aircraft exhaust. For fumes and odours, add a carbon pleated filter.
