Air quality in Clarington
- Highway 401, 418 & 35/115
- Lakeshore industry
- New subdivision dust
- Farm & orchard pollen
- Wood smoke
- Wildfire smoke
Clarington is a big municipality – it stretches from the Lake Ontario shore up over the Oak Ridges Moraine – with Courtice, Bowmanville and Newcastle along the 401 and smaller villages like Orono, Hampton, Newtonville and Enniskillen scattered through the countryside. The southern edge is busy: the 401 carries truck traffic east toward Kingston, the new 418 and the 407 extension now link to the 35/115 corridor north to Peterborough, and the lakeshore is home to a nuclear generating station, a cement plant, and the regional energy-from-waste facility near Courtice.
Courtice and Bowmanville have also been among the fastest-growing parts of Durham, with new subdivisions spreading north of Highway 2. Homes in these areas live with construction dust for years while the streets around them fill in.
The rural north is cleaner, but farms, apple orchards and the Ganaraska forest bring heavy spring pollen and late-summer ragweed, and gravel roads and fieldwork kick up dust. Many country homes burn wood in winter. And like the rest of the region, Clarington has seen smoke from northern Ontario and Quebec wildfires in recent summers.
Clarington climate, homes & HVAC systems
Clarington's lakeshore communities have cold, snowy winters and warm, humid summers; up on the moraine around Orono, Kendal and Enniskillen it is noticeably colder and windier, with more snow. Furnaces run from fall to spring and central air carries most suburban homes through summer.
Bowmanville and Newcastle have historic downtowns with Victorian and early-1900s homes, often with retrofitted forced air and 1-inch filters. Courtice and the newer parts of Bowmanville are dominated by modern subdivisions with high-efficiency gas furnaces, central air and frequently HRVs and 4- or 5-inch media cabinets. Rural Clarington still has many farmhouses on wells with oil or propane furnaces, wood stoves and heat pumps.
MERV 11 for most homes, MERV 13 for new builds & smoke
MERV 11 handles Clarington's mix of pollen, dust and pet dander. Choose MERV 13 for a new home in Courtice or Bowmanville, for asthma, or when wildfire smoke rolls in. Wood-stove households benefit from MERV 11–13 too.

- Summer: Close up on smoke advisory days and check the filter afterwards.
- Fall: Change the filter before heating season – and after harvest dust settles in farm country.
- Winter: Check monthly if you burn wood or live up on the windy moraine.
Which MERV rating is right for your Clarington home?
MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) measures how well a filter captures particles of different sizes under the ASHRAE 52.2 test standard. Higher numbers catch smaller particles. Most residential furnaces in Canada run well on MERV 8 to MERV 13 – here is how to choose:
| Rating | What it captures | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| MERV 8 | Dust, lint, pollen, mould spores and larger particles (3–10 microns) | Budget-friendly everyday protection, rental units, new-build dust |
| MERV 11 | Everything MERV 8 does plus pet dander, fine dust and some smoke (1–3 microns) | Most family homes, pets, seasonal allergies |
| MERV 13 | Fine particles down to 0.3–1 micron, including much of the PM2.5 in wildfire smoke | Asthma, allergies, wildfire smoke, newborns and seniors |
Not sure? Read our complete MERV rating guide. If you are moving up to MERV 13 on an older furnace, a deeper 2-inch or 4-inch filter keeps airflow healthy.
Popular furnace filter sizes in Clarington
Newer Courtice and Bowmanville homes often use 4-inch or 5-inch media filters, while older downtown homes and farmhouses may need special sizes.
How often to change your furnace filter in Clarington
| Filter depth | Typical home | Pets, allergies or smoke |
|---|---|---|
| 1-inch | Every 1–3 months | Every 30–45 days |
| 2-inch | Every 3–4 months | Every 2 months |
| 4-inch | Every 6–9 months | Every 4–6 months |
| 5-inch | Every 9–12 months | Every 6 months |
In a new Clarington subdivision, check every month for the first year; rural homes with wood stoves should check monthly through the winter. See the full filter changing guide.

MERV 11 suits most homes. Choose MERV 13 for new builds, allergies, asthma or wildfire smoke.
My new home in Courtice or Bowmanville goes through filters fast. Why?
New homes shed construction dust for months, and neighbouring lots are still being built. Check monthly in the first year.
I heat with wood in rural Clarington. Will a furnace filter help?
A pleated MERV 11 or MERV 13 filter captures fine particles from wood smoke that circulate through your ducts. Make sure your stove and chimney are properly vented and cleaned.
Does Clarington get wildfire smoke?
Yes, smoke from northern Ontario and Quebec fires has reached Clarington in recent summers. Keep a spare MERV 13 filter and read our wildfire smoke guide.

MERV 11 or MERV 13 captures most pollen. Change it at the start of spring and again after ragweed season. See our allergy season guide.
