Air quality in St. John's
- Fog, drizzle & humidity
- Mould in older homes
- Harbour & ship emissions
- Wood stove smoke
- Wildfire smoke
- Spring road dust
St. John's is often called one of Canada's foggiest, windiest and wettest cities, and that weather shapes its indoor air more than anything else. Fog rolls in off the North Atlantic through the Narrows, drizzle can last for days, and older homes in the downtown core, the Battery, Georgestown and the East and West Ends – many built of wood on rock with limited insulation – hold onto that moisture. Mould and dust mites thrive in damp basements and crawl spaces, and their allergens circulate through ducts whenever the air handler or HRV runs.
The constant wind keeps outdoor pollution low on most days, but there are local sources. Offshore supply vessels, tankers and visiting ships run engines in the harbour; traffic builds along the Outer Ring Road, Pitts Memorial Drive, Kenmount Road and Topsail Road; and the gravel and sand spread on hilly streets all winter turns into gritty dust each spring. On cold, calm nights, wood stove smoke can settle in neighbourhoods like Kilbride and the Goulds.
Wildfire smoke reaches the Avalon too. Smoke from Quebec and Labrador fires has hazed the city in recent summers, and wildfires on the Avalon Peninsula itself in 2025 brought evacuations close to the metro area. Fine smoke and wood-burning particles pass straight through cheap fibreglass filters – a pleated MERV 11 or MERV 13 filter captures far more of them.
St. John's climate, homes & HVAC systems
St. John's has a cool, wet maritime climate: winters are milder than inland Canada but stormy and snowy – the city is known for big blizzards like the 2020 storm that shut it down for a week – while spring is long and damp and summers are short and comfortable. The heating season stretches from late September into June, and summer cooling needs are modest, so heat pumps here work mainly as heaters and dehumidifiers.
Electric baseboards heat many St. John's homes, especially downtown row houses and older bungalows, but ductless and ducted heat pumps are spreading fast, and plenty of homes still have oil furnaces or oil-fired hot-water systems. Newer subdivisions in Kenmount Terrace, Southlands, Paradise and Conception Bay South are built airtight with HRVs, which need clean filters to bring in fresh air without pulling in pollen and smoke. Apartment and condo buildings often use compact air handlers with less common filter sizes.
MERV 11 for damp homes, MERV 13 for allergies & smoke
MERV 11 captures mould spores, dust-mite allergens and pet dander without restricting airflow on most St. John's furnaces and heat pumps. Use MERV 13 for asthma, allergies or wildfire smoke, and a carbon pleated filter if musty or wood-smoke odours linger.

- Spring: Replace the filter once the snowbanks melt and road grit starts to blow.
- Summer: Keep windows closed and a MERV 13 ready when smoke drifts in from wildfires.
- Fall: Change the filter and clean HRV screens before storm season and the first cold snap.
- Winter: Check monthly during blizzards and long stretches when the furnace runs constantly.
Which MERV rating is right for your St. John's home?
MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) measures how well a filter captures particles of different sizes under the ASHRAE 52.2 test standard. Higher numbers catch smaller particles. Most residential furnaces in Canada run well on MERV 8 to MERV 13 – here is how to choose:
| Rating | What it captures | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| MERV 8 | Dust, lint, pollen, mould spores and larger particles (3–10 microns) | Budget-friendly everyday protection, rental units, new-build dust |
| MERV 11 | Everything MERV 8 does plus pet dander, fine dust and some smoke (1–3 microns) | Most family homes, pets, seasonal allergies |
| MERV 13 | Fine particles down to 0.3–1 micron, including much of the PM2.5 in wildfire smoke | Asthma, allergies, wildfire smoke, newborns and seniors |
Not sure? Read our complete MERV rating guide. If you are moving up to MERV 13 on an older furnace, a deeper 2-inch or 4-inch filter keeps airflow healthy.

St. John's air filter FAQ
What MERV rating do St. John's homes need?
MERV 11 suits most homes, capturing mould spores, dust and dander. Choose MERV 13 for asthma, allergies or wildfire smoke, as long as your system is rated for it.
How do I deal with mould and damp in an older downtown house?
Fix leaks and drainage, run a dehumidifier and keep a clean MERV 11 filter in your air handler or HRV. Replace the filter more often during wet spells, when it collects the most spores.
I have baseboard heat and an HRV. Which filter do I need?
Check the HRV's filter compartment for the size printed on the frame. Many HRVs use non-standard sizes – we stock special sizes and can build custom ones.
Does St. John's get wildfire smoke?
Yes. Smoke from fires in Quebec, Labrador and on the Avalon itself has reached the city in recent summers. Keep a spare MERV 13 filter and see our wildfire smoke guide.
Does a heat pump need its filter changed often?
Yes. A clogged filter reduces heat pump efficiency and comfort. Check 1-inch filters monthly in the heating season and replace every 1–3 months.
Can you supply apartment and condo buildings in St. John's?
Yes. We supply landlords and condo corporations with in-suite and common-area filters in bulk – see our bulk orders page.
How much does shipping to St. John's cost?
Orders to St. John's ship for $45 flat rate. Most orders arrive in 3–9 business days, with no customs or duties because everything ships from within Canada.
Can you make custom-size filters for my St. John's home or building?
Yes. Because we manufacture in Brampton, we can build non-standard and custom sizes to order – usually within about 3 weeks. Use our custom filter form or email info@canadianairfilters.com with your dimensions and MERV rating.
