Air quality in Oshawa

  • Highway 401 & 407 traffic
  • Auto & industrial sites
  • Older homes & ductwork
  • Farmland pollen & dust
  • Lakeshore humidity
  • Wildfire smoke

Oshawa grew up as a car town – General Motors has built vehicles here for more than a century, and its assembly plant in the south end is still one of the city's biggest employers. Industrial and manufacturing sites line the 401 and the lakeshore, the Port of Oshawa handles bulk cargo, and the 401 carries a heavy flow of trucks east to Kingston and Montreal. On hot, still summer days, traffic exhaust and industrial emissions can combine with ozone to make the lakeshore air feel heavy.

Head north and the city changes. The 407 now crosses north Oshawa, new subdivisions have spread around Taunton, Windfields and the Ontario Tech and Durham College campus, and fields still border the northern edge of the city. Spring planting, harvest and nearby home building all add dust and pollen to the air, especially in the newest neighbourhoods.

Oshawa's creek valleys – Oshawa Creek, Harmony Creek and the Second Marsh wetland on the lake – bring lots of tree pollen in spring and ragweed in late summer. Like the rest of Durham, Oshawa has also seen wildfire smoke from northern Ontario and Quebec drift over in recent summers. A pleated MERV 11 or MERV 13 filter captures far more of those fine particles than a basic fibreglass filter.

Oshawa climate, homes & HVAC systems

Oshawa has cold, snowy winters and warm, humid summers, slightly moderated by Lake Ontario near the waterfront and a bit colder up in the north end. The furnace typically runs from October to April, and central air does the work in July and August, so most homes have the fan moving for much of the year.

Much of central Oshawa – around downtown, Vanier, McLaughlin and O'Neill – was built in the early and mid-1900s for autoworker families. Many of those homes still have original ductwork that has collected decades of dust, and older furnaces with 1-inch filter racks. Neighbourhoods like Eastdale, Samac and Pinecrest date from the 1970s–90s, while Windfields, Kedron and north Taunton have new homes with high-efficiency furnaces, HRVs and sometimes 4- or 5-inch media cabinets. Oshawa also has a lot of rental housing, from student houses near the university to duplexes and walk-up apartments.

MERV 8–11 for older furnaces, MERV 13 for allergies & smoke

Older furnaces in Oshawa's post-war homes can struggle with very dense filters, so MERV 8 or MERV 11 is a safe everyday choice. In newer or high-efficiency systems, step up to MERV 13 for pollen, pets and wildfire smoke.

Seasonal filter tips for Oshawa

  • Spring: Swap filters as farm fields north of the city are worked and the creek valleys bloom.
  • Summer: Keep windows shut on smoke advisory days and let the AC filter the air.
  • Fall: Landlords – change filters in every unit before tenants turn the heat on in September and October.
  • Winter: Check monthly, especially in older homes where the furnace runs long cycles.

Which MERV rating is right for your Oshawa home?

MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) measures how well a filter captures particles of different sizes under the ASHRAE 52.2 test standard. Higher numbers catch smaller particles. Most residential furnaces in Canada run well on MERV 8 to MERV 13 – here is how to choose:

Rating What it captures Best for
MERV 8 Dust, lint, pollen, mould spores and larger particles (3–10 microns) Budget-friendly everyday protection, rental units, new-build dust
MERV 11 Everything MERV 8 does plus pet dander, fine dust and some smoke (1–3 microns) Most family homes, pets, seasonal allergies
MERV 13 Fine particles down to 0.3–1 micron, including much of the PM2.5 in wildfire smoke Asthma, allergies, wildfire smoke, newborns and seniors

Not sure? Read our complete MERV rating guide. If you are moving up to MERV 13 on an older furnace, a deeper 2-inch or 4-inch filter keeps airflow healthy.

Popular furnace filter sizes in Oshawa

Most Oshawa furnaces take a standard 1-inch filter. Some older furnaces in central Oshawa use sizes that are hard to find in stores – we build special sizes to match.

How to measure: the size printed on the filter frame (e.g. 16x25x1) is the nominal size; the real filter is usually about ½" smaller (15½ x 24½ x ¾). Order by the printed size, or measure your old filter and use our size search. Odd size? We build special and custom sizes to order.

How often to change your furnace filter in Oshawa

Filter depth Typical home Pets, allergies or smoke
1-inch Every 1–3 months Every 30–45 days
2-inch Every 3–4 months Every 2 months
4-inch Every 6–9 months Every 4–6 months
5-inch Every 9–12 months Every 6 months

In Oshawa's older homes, dusty original ductwork can load a new filter quickly – check it after the first month, and change filters between tenants in rental units. See the full filter changing guide.

Oshawa air filter FAQ

What filter is best for an older Oshawa home?

Older furnaces may not be designed for high-resistance filters. A MERV 8 or MERV 11 pleated filter is a safe choice. If you want MERV 13, watch for weaker airflow at the vents and check with your HVAC technician.

I rent out units near Ontario Tech and Durham College. Can I buy in bulk?

Yes. Landlords and property managers can stock up on common sizes or request a quote for larger quantities on our bulk order page. Changing filters between tenants helps keep systems running well.

How often should I change my furnace filter in Oshawa?

Every 1–3 months for 1-inch filters and every 6–12 months for 4-inch filters. Check monthly in winter and during smoke events. See our filter changing guide.

Do you supply filters for Oshawa industrial buildings?

Yes. We make pleated, pocket and rigid filters for commercial and industrial HVAC systems and can match unusual sizes. Browse our commercial filters or request a quote.

Does Oshawa get wildfire smoke?

Yes. Smoke from fires in northern Ontario and Quebec has reached Oshawa in recent summers. Keep a spare MERV 13 filter ready and read our wildfire smoke guide.

Will a better filter help with industrial or traffic odours?

A MERV 13 filter captures fine particles, but not gases or smells. For odours, use a carbon pleated filter.

How much does shipping to Oshawa cost?
