Air quality in St. Catharines
- QEW traffic
- Welland Canal shipping
- Orchard & vineyard pollen
- Greenhouse & farm dust
- Lake Ontario humidity
- Cross-border smog
St. Catharines is the largest city in the Niagara Region, wedged between the Lake Ontario shoreline and the Niagara Escarpment. The QEW runs straight through the city carrying traffic between Toronto, Niagara Falls and the U.S. border crossings, and Highway 406 links it south to Thorold and Welland. Lake freighters still move through the Welland Canal locks on the city's east side, adding marine diesel exhaust near Port Weller and Merritton.
The Niagara Peninsula's sheltered climate makes it Ontario's fruit belt. Vineyards, peach and cherry orchards and nurseries surround the city, and Niagara is home to a large share of Ontario's floriculture greenhouses. That means a long pollen season starting with fruit-tree blossom in May, field and orchard dust through summer, and plenty of ragweed in the fall. Damp lake air also encourages mould in older basements, especially in low-lying neighbourhoods near Twelve Mile Creek.
Being so close to the border, Niagara also picks up air drifting across Lake Erie and the Niagara River from industrial areas in New York State and further south-west. On hot, still summer days, smog can settle over the peninsula, and wildfire smoke from Northern Ontario and Quebec has reached the region in recent summers too.
St. Catharines climate, homes & HVAC systems
Thanks to Lake Ontario and the shelter of the escarpment, St. Catharines has one of the mildest climates in Ontario – the same conditions that make Niagara wine country possible. Winters are shorter and less severe than in most of the province, though lake-effect squalls still bring snow, and summers are warm and humid. Central air runs from June through early September, and the furnace takes over from late October to April.
Housing reflects the city's long history. Downtown, Facer and the old village of Port Dalhousie have brick homes and cottages more than a century old, many with retrofitted forced-air systems and 1-inch filter slots. Post-war bungalows and split-levels fill Grantham, Western Hill and the north end, while newer two-storey homes in the west end and across Niagara-on-the-Lake, Lincoln and Pelham usually have high-efficiency furnaces and 4-inch media filters. Niagara also has one of the oldest populations in Ontario, with many retirement residences and seniors' apartment buildings.
MERV 11 for most homes, MERV 13 for seniors & allergies
MERV 11 handles orchard pollen, farm dust and pet dander well for most Niagara households. For homes with seniors, young children, asthma or heavy allergies, step up to MERV 13 – read our guide to indoor air for kids and seniors.

- Spring: Install a fresh filter before fruit-tree blossom and grass pollen arrive in May.
- Summer: Keep windows closed on humid smog days and check the AC filter in July.
- Fall: Change the filter after harvest dust settles and before the furnace comes on in late October.
- Winter: Check every month or two – milder winters mean the furnace runs a little less than elsewhere.
Which MERV rating is right for your St. Catharines home?
MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) measures how well a filter captures particles of different sizes under the ASHRAE 52.2 test standard. Higher numbers catch smaller particles. Most residential furnaces in Canada run well on MERV 8 to MERV 13 – here is how to choose:
| Rating | What it captures | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| MERV 8 | Dust, lint, pollen, mould spores and larger particles (3–10 microns) | Budget-friendly everyday protection, rental units, new-build dust |
| MERV 11 | Everything MERV 8 does plus pet dander, fine dust and some smoke (1–3 microns) | Most family homes, pets, seasonal allergies |
| MERV 13 | Fine particles down to 0.3–1 micron, including much of the PM2.5 in wildfire smoke | Asthma, allergies, wildfire smoke, newborns and seniors |
Not sure? Read our complete MERV rating guide. If you are moving up to MERV 13 on an older furnace, a deeper 2-inch or 4-inch filter keeps airflow healthy.
Popular furnace filter sizes in St. Catharines
These are the most common furnace sizes in St. Catharines homes. Century houses in Port Dalhousie and downtown often need special sizes, and newer builds use 4-inch filters.
How often to change your furnace filter in St. Catharines
| Filter depth | Typical home | Pets, allergies or smoke |
|---|---|---|
| 1-inch | Every 1–3 months | Every 30–45 days |
| 2-inch | Every 3–4 months | Every 2 months |
| 4-inch | Every 6–9 months | Every 4–6 months |
| 5-inch | Every 9–12 months | Every 6 months |
In Niagara, change your filter after the spring blossom season and again after the fall grape harvest, when dust and pollen counts are at their highest. See the full filter changing guide.

St. Catharines air filter FAQ
What MERV rating works best in St. Catharines?
MERV 11 is a strong everyday choice for Niagara's long pollen season. Choose MERV 13 for asthma, allergies, seniors or newborns, or when smog and wildfire smoke advisories are in effect.
Do you ship across the whole Niagara Region?
Yes. We ship to St. Catharines, Niagara Falls, Welland, Thorold, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Lincoln, Grimsby, Fort Erie, Port Colborne and every rural address on the peninsula.
Why is allergy season so long in Niagara?
The mild lake climate gives Niagara one of the longest growing seasons in Ontario, so tree, orchard, grass and ragweed pollen overlap from spring to fall. See our allergy season guide for timing.
My Port Dalhousie home has an older furnace. Can it handle MERV 13?
Many older furnaces can, but a thin MERV 13 filter adds airflow resistance. If yours has a 1-inch slot, MERV 11 is often the better match – or ask an HVAC contractor about adding a deeper filter cabinet.
Can a filter help with odours from nearby farms or the canal?
A standard pleated filter captures particles, not odours. For smells, try a carbon pleated filter, which adds activated carbon to absorb common household and outdoor odours.
Do you supply retirement and long-term care homes in Niagara?
Yes. We supply care homes across the region with pleated and commercial filters by the case, with scheduled deliveries available. Request a bulk quote.
