Air quality in Scugog
- Farm & field dust
- Lake Scugog humidity
- Wood stove smoke
- Hay & ragweed pollen
- Wildfire smoke
The Township of Scugog wraps around Lake Scugog, a shallow lake north of the Oak Ridges Moraine that drains toward the Kawarthas, with Port Perry's historic main street on the western shore and Scugog Island in the middle. Away from the lake the township is mostly farmland – dairy, beef, cash crops and horse farms – dotted with hamlets like Blackstock, Greenbank, Seagrave and Caesarea.
That rural setting means the air is generally clean, but seasonal. Spring planting and fall harvest raise soil dust, hay fields and roadside ragweed send pollen counts up through the summer, and gravel concession roads add dust whenever traffic passes. In winter, many country homes and cottages burn wood, and on cold, still mornings that smoke can hang low over the lake and the valleys.
Lake Scugog itself adds moisture: lakeside cottages and older homes can stay damp, with musty basements and a higher risk of mould. Smoke from northern Ontario and Quebec wildfires has also drifted over Durham's lake country in recent summers. A good pleated filter, changed on schedule, helps keep all of that out of the living room.
Scugog climate, homes & HVAC systems
Scugog sits well inland and higher than the Lake Ontario shore, so winters are colder and snowier than in Oshawa or Whitby, with a long heating season from late September into May. Summers are warm, and humidity near the lake can be high.
Port Perry has a mix of Victorian homes near Queen Street, post-war bungalows and newer subdivisions on the edges of town, most heated by natural gas with central air. Out in the township, many farmhouses and cottages are on private wells and heat with propane or oil furnaces, wood stoves or heat pumps, and some seasonal cottages sit closed for months at a time – which means a dusty first start in the fall.
MERV 11 for farm & lake country, MERV 13 for wood smoke
MERV 11 handles field dust and pollen well in most Scugog homes. If you burn wood, have allergies or are dealing with wildfire smoke, step up to MERV 13. Musty lakeside cottage? Try a carbon pleated filter along with a dehumidifier.

- Spring: Change the filter when the fields are worked and cottage season opens on Lake Scugog.
- Summer: Watch for hay and ragweed pollen in July and August, and close up on smoke days.
- Fall: Fit a fresh filter after harvest and before the furnace or wood stove starts.
- Winter: Check monthly – the long, cold inland winter keeps the fan running.
Which MERV rating is right for your Scugog home?
MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) measures how well a filter captures particles of different sizes under the ASHRAE 52.2 test standard. Higher numbers catch smaller particles. Most residential furnaces in Canada run well on MERV 8 to MERV 13 – here is how to choose:
| Rating | What it captures | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| MERV 8 | Dust, lint, pollen, mould spores and larger particles (3–10 microns) | Budget-friendly everyday protection, rental units, new-build dust |
| MERV 11 | Everything MERV 8 does plus pet dander, fine dust and some smoke (1–3 microns) | Most family homes, pets, seasonal allergies |
| MERV 13 | Fine particles down to 0.3–1 micron, including much of the PM2.5 in wildfire smoke | Asthma, allergies, wildfire smoke, newborns and seniors |
Not sure? Read our complete MERV rating guide. If you are moving up to MERV 13 on an older furnace, a deeper 2-inch or 4-inch filter keeps airflow healthy.
Popular furnace filter sizes in Scugog
Most Port Perry furnaces take standard 1-inch filters. Older farmhouse and cottage furnaces often use special sizes that are hard to find locally.

| Filter depth | Typical home | Pets, allergies or smoke |

Scugog air filter FAQ
What filter is best for a Port Perry home?
MERV 11 is a great everyday choice. Use MERV 13 if you have allergies or asthma, burn wood, or during wildfire smoke.
I have a cottage on Lake Scugog. When should I change the filter?
Put in a fresh filter when you open the cottage and again before you close it. Furnaces that sit idle collect dust that blows out on the first start.
Do rural homes need a different filter?
Usually not a different size, but farm dust and wood smoke load filters faster. Check monthly during planting, harvest and the heating season.
Can a filter help with a musty, damp lakeside home?
A filter traps mould spores circulating in the air, and a carbon filter helps with odours. Control the moisture source with a dehumidifier too.
Does Scugog get wildfire smoke?
Yes. Smoke from northern fires has reached Durham's lake country in recent summers. Keep a MERV 13 filter on hand and read our wildfire smoke guide.
My old farmhouse furnace takes an odd size. Can you help?
Yes. Measure your old filter or read the frame, then search our site. If we don't stock it, we will make it to order.
How much does shipping to Scugog cost?
Orders to Scugog ship for Ontario's $25 flat rate, and orders of $2,500 or more ship free. Addresses within 60 km of our Brampton facility qualify for free local delivery – if yours does, “Free GTA Delivery” will appear at checkout. Most orders arrive in 3–9 business days.
Can you make custom-size filters for my Scugog home or building?
Yes. Because we manufacture in Brampton, we can build non-standard and custom sizes to order – usually within about 3 weeks. Use our custom filter form or email info@canadianairfilters.com with your dimensions and MERV rating.
