Air quality in Markham
- Highway 404, 407 & 7 traffic
- New subdivision construction
- Rouge Valley tree pollen
- Farmland dust & ragweed
- Busy multigenerational homes
- Wildfire smoke
Markham sits where Highway 404 meets the 407, and the Highway 7 corridor through the city is lined with tech offices, business parks and busy plazas. Downtown Markham and the newer communities of Cornell, Wismer, Berczy Village and Cathedraltown have grown quickly, so new construction, road widening and transit work have been a fact of life in many parts of the city. Rush-hour traffic on the 404 and Highway 7 adds exhaust and fine road dust, especially in neighbourhoods close to the main corridors.
The east side borders Rouge National Urban Park and the Rouge River valley, and the north still opens onto farmland toward Stouffville and Victoria Square. That means heavy spring tree pollen from maples, oaks and birches, grass pollen in June and a strong ragweed season from August into September. Hot, humid summer days can trap ozone and fine particles, and wildfire smoke from northern Ontario and Quebec has drifted over Markham several times in recent years.
Indoors, many Markham homes are busy multigenerational households, with grandparents, parents and children under one roof. More people means more cooking, more dust and more time with the furnace fan running – and seniors and young children are the ones who benefit most from cleaner indoor air. Our guide to indoor air for kids and seniors covers a few simple steps.
Markham climate, homes & HVAC systems
Markham has the typical inland GTA climate: cold, snowy winters that keep furnaces running from November through March, and warm, humid summers when central air works hard from June to September. Spring and fall bring a short break, but with heating and cooling stretching across most of the year, filters are working nearly all the time.
Housing ranges widely. Unionville and Markham Village have heritage homes and older houses where ductwork and filter slots may be original, while Milliken, Thornhill and Markham's 1970s–1990s subdivisions mostly take standard 1-inch filters. The large newer homes in Angus Glen, Cathedraltown and Berczy Village often have high-efficiency furnaces with 4- or 5-inch media cabinets and HRVs, and the condo towers around Downtown Markham use fan coils or in-suite heat pumps.
MERV 11 for busy family homes, MERV 13 for pollen & asthma
MERV 11 traps everyday household dust, pollen and pet dander without straining most furnaces. For allergy sufferers near the Rouge, homes with seniors or young children, or during smoke events, upgrade to MERV 13.

- Spring: Fresh filter as the Rouge Valley trees leaf out in April.
- Summer: Ragweed peaks in late summer – swap again in August if allergies flare.
- Fall: Put in a new filter before the furnace's first run of the season.
- Winter: More people at home means more dust – check every month.
Which MERV rating is right for your Markham home?
MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) measures how well a filter captures particles of different sizes under the ASHRAE 52.2 test standard. Higher numbers catch smaller particles. Most residential furnaces in Canada run well on MERV 8 to MERV 13 – here is how to choose:
| Rating | What it captures | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| MERV 8 | Dust, lint, pollen, mould spores and larger particles (3–10 microns) | Budget-friendly everyday protection, rental units, new-build dust |
| MERV 11 | Everything MERV 8 does plus pet dander, fine dust and some smoke (1–3 microns) | Most family homes, pets, seasonal allergies |
| MERV 13 | Fine particles down to 0.3–1 micron, including much of the PM2.5 in wildfire smoke | Asthma, allergies, wildfire smoke, newborns and seniors |
Not sure? Read our complete MERV rating guide. If you are moving up to MERV 13 on an older furnace, a deeper 2-inch or 4-inch filter keeps airflow healthy.
Popular furnace filter sizes in Markham
These cover most Markham furnaces, from 1980s Milliken homes to new builds in Cathedraltown. Older or unusual systems, and condo fan coils, may need a special size – we make those in-house.
How often to change your furnace filter in Markham
| Filter depth | Typical home | Pets, allergies or smoke |
|---|---|---|
| 1-inch | Every 1–3 months | Every 30–45 days |
| 2-inch | Every 3–4 months | Every 2 months |
| 4-inch | Every 6–9 months | Every 4–6 months |
| 5-inch | Every 9–12 months | Every 6 months |
In Markham, larger multigenerational households and homes with pets should check 1-inch filters monthly, and swap again in late summer if ragweed allergies flare. See the full filter changing guide.

Markham air filter FAQ
What MERV rating is best for a Markham family home?
MERV 11 is a good everyday balance of filtration and airflow for most Markham houses. Choose MERV 13 if someone has asthma or seasonal allergies, or during wildfire smoke events.
Does living near Rouge Park mean more pollen indoors?
Neighbourhoods close to the Rouge Valley and the farmland to the north can see more tree and ragweed pollen in season. Keep windows closed on high-pollen days and run a fresh MERV 11 or 13 filter.
We have grandparents and a baby at home – what filter should we use?
A MERV 13 filter captures a larger share of fine particles and is a good choice for homes with seniors or infants. Check it monthly, since busy households load filters faster.
My Unionville home is older – will standard filters fit?
Many do, but older furnaces and retrofitted ductwork sometimes use odd sizes. Measure your existing filter; if it isn't listed, we can build a custom size.
