Air quality in Caledon

  • Tree & grass pollen
  • Farm field dust
  • Gravel pits & roads
  • Wood stove smoke
  • New-build dust in Bolton
  • Wildfire smoke

Caledon is the countryside side of Peel – a large rural town stretching from Mayfield West up through the Niagara Escarpment and the Oak Ridges Moraine, with the Credit and Humber rivers cutting through forest, farmland and small villages. That green setting brings clean-feeling air most of the year, but also a heavy pollen season. Maple, oak and birch pollen arrive in spring, hay and grasses follow in early summer, and ragweed lingers along field edges into September.

Dust is the other local story. Caledon is home to many aggregate pits and quarries, and gravel trucks, gravel side roads and freshly worked fields all kick up coarse dust in dry spells. Highway 10, Highway 9, Highway 50 and Airport Road carry steady truck traffic, and the new subdivisions in Bolton, Mayfield West and Southfields Village mean construction dust for families moving in. On cold, calm winter nights, smoke from wood stoves and fireplaces can settle in the valleys around villages like Inglewood, Belfountain and Terra Cotta, and wildfire smoke reaches here just as it does the rest of southern Ontario.

Many rural Caledon homes also draw on private wells and septic systems, have attached workshops or barns, and keep dogs, cats or horses – all of which add dust, dander and hay particles to indoor air. Tightly built new homes in Bolton and Mayfield West rely on mechanical ventilation, so the filter on the furnace or HRV does a lot of the work of keeping outdoor dust and pollen out.

Caledon climate, homes & HVAC systems

Up on the escarpment and moraine, Caledon sits higher and further from Lake Ontario than Brampton, so winters are colder and snowier and the heating season starts earlier in the fall. Summers are warm but usually less muggy than the lakeshore. Furnaces and heat pumps carry most of the load here, and filters work hardest from late October through March.

Housing ranges from century farmhouses and stone village homes in Alton, Cheltenham and Caledon Village to 1980s–2000s estate homes on large lots and brand-new detached homes in Bolton and Mayfield West. Rural properties often heat with propane or oil furnaces, heat pumps or wood stoves with forced-air backup, and many newer homes have HRVs and 4- or 5-inch media cabinets.

MERV 11 for pollen season, MERV 13 for wood smoke & allergies

MERV 11 handles Caledon's farm dust and tree pollen well for most households. If anyone has hay fever or asthma, you burn wood, or wildfire smoke is in the forecast, switch to MERV 13 – a 4-inch depth keeps airflow healthy on older propane and oil furnaces.

Seasonal filter tips for Caledon

  • Spring: Fit a fresh filter in April before tree pollen and field work peak.
  • Summer: Check monthly during hay season and dry, dusty spells on gravel roads.
  • Fall: Change the filter early – Caledon's hills turn cold before the rest of Peel.
  • Winter: Check monthly if you burn wood; ash and smoke load filters quickly.

Which MERV rating is right for your Caledon home?

MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) measures how well a filter captures particles of different sizes under the ASHRAE 52.2 test standard. Higher numbers catch smaller particles. Most residential furnaces in Canada run well on MERV 8 to MERV 13 – here is how to choose:

Rating What it captures Best for
MERV 8 Dust, lint, pollen, mould spores and larger particles (3–10 microns) Budget-friendly everyday protection, rental units, new-build dust
MERV 11 Everything MERV 8 does plus pet dander, fine dust and some smoke (1–3 microns) Most family homes, pets, seasonal allergies
MERV 13 Fine particles down to 0.3–1 micron, including much of the PM2.5 in wildfire smoke Asthma, allergies, wildfire smoke, newborns and seniors

Not sure? Read our complete MERV rating guide. If you are moving up to MERV 13 on an older furnace, a deeper 2-inch or 4-inch filter keeps airflow healthy.

Popular furnace filter sizes in Caledon

Most Caledon furnaces take one of these sizes. Older farmhouse systems and some heat pump air handlers use odd dimensions – we build special sizes to order in Brampton.

How to measure: the size printed on the filter frame (e.g. 16x25x1) is the nominal size; the real filter is usually about ½" smaller (15½ x 24½ x ¾). Order by the printed size, or measure your old filter and use our size search. Odd size? We build special and custom sizes to order.

How often to change your furnace filter in Caledon

Filter depth Typical home Pets, allergies or smoke
1-inch Every 1–3 months Every 30–45 days
2-inch Every 3–4 months Every 2 months
4-inch Every 6–9 months Every 4–6 months
5-inch Every 9–12 months Every 6 months

In Caledon, change filters more often during harvest, on gravel-road properties and in homes that burn wood through the winter. See the full filter changing guide.

Caledon air filter FAQ

Do you deliver free to Caledon?

Most Caledon addresses fall inside our free GTA delivery zone, including Bolton, Caledon East and Mayfield West. If “Free GTA Delivery” appears at checkout, your address qualifies – or pick up free in Brampton, just down Highway 10.

What filter works best with a wood stove?

Wood smoke is mostly fine particles, so a MERV 13 filter on your forced-air system captures far more than a basic filter. Check it monthly during the burning season.

Does a propane or oil furnace need a different filter?

Usually not – propane and oil furnaces use the same standard filter sizes as natural gas furnaces. Check the size printed on your current filter frame.

Is pollen worse in rural Caledon?

Caledon's forests, hay fields and river valleys produce a lot of tree and grass pollen from April to July. A MERV 11 or MERV 13 filter changed at the start of the season helps keep it out of your home.

My Bolton home is brand new – how often should I change the filter?

Monthly for the first few months while construction continues nearby, then every 1–3 months for a 1-inch filter or every 6–12 months for a 4- or 5-inch filter.

Can you supply filters for barns and workshops?

Yes. We sell media pads and rolls, washable filters and pleated filters for shop heaters, barn ventilation and dusty work areas.

How much does shipping to Caledon cost?

Caledon is inside our free delivery zone (within 60 km of our Brampton facility). Choose “Free GTA Delivery” at checkout, or pick up free at 15 Melanie Drive, Brampton.

Can you make custom-size filters for my Caledon home or building?

Yes. Because we manufacture in Brampton, we can build non-standard and custom sizes to order – usually within about 3 weeks. Use our custom filter form or email info@canadianairfilters.com with your dimensions and MERV rating.
