Air quality in Edmonton
- Extreme winter cold
- Winter inversions
- Northern wildfire smoke
- Refinery & industrial emissions
- Poplar fluff & pollen
- Spring road dust
Edmonton has one of the longest, coldest winters of any major city in North America. Furnaces can run from September well into May, and with windows sealed for months, the same indoor air passes through the filter again and again. Dust, lint, pet dander and cooking particles accumulate quickly, and the very dry air keeps them suspended. On the coldest, calmest days, temperature inversions trap vehicle exhaust and wood smoke close to the ground over the city.
Industry is a bigger part of the picture here than in most Canadian cities. Refinery Row in Strathcona County, just east of the city, and the petrochemical plants and upgraders of Alberta's Industrial Heartland around Fort Saskatchewan sit upwind of some neighbourhoods on certain days. Traffic on the Anthony Henday, Whitemud Drive, Yellowhead Trail and Gateway Boulevard adds steady emissions, and spring melt leaves streets coated in gravel dust until sweeping is done.
Edmonton is also one of the Canadian cities most exposed to wildfire smoke. Fires in northern Alberta, BC, Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories have pushed the city's AQHI to the top of the scale in several recent summers, sometimes for days at a stretch. In late May and June, poplar fluff drifts through the North Saskatchewan River valley along with tree pollen, followed by grass pollen into midsummer.
Edmonton climate, homes & HVAC systems
Edmonton's climate is cold, dry and sunny. Deep-freeze stretches well below minus 30 happen most winters, heating season is the longest of any big Canadian city outside the north, and summers are short, warm and bright with long daylight hours. More homes now have central air after recent heat waves, but the furnace remains the hardest-working appliance in the house.
The city's housing tells its history: early-1900s character homes in Highlands, Strathcona and Westmount; post-war bungalows in neighbourhoods like Bonnie Doon, Parkallen and Capilano; 1970s and 80s split-levels and two-storeys in Mill Woods, Castle Downs and Clareview; and fast-growing new suburbs in Windermere, Heritage Valley, the Meadows and Griesbach. Older homes usually take 1-inch filters, often in mid-efficiency furnaces, while newer builds have high-efficiency furnaces with media cabinets, HRVs and humidifiers. Oliver and downtown condos use fan coils or in-suite heat pumps.
MERV 11 through winter, MERV 13 for smoke season
MERV 11 keeps up with the dust and dander of a long, closed-up winter without restricting airflow on cold nights. Use MERV 13 during wildfire smoke or if someone at home has asthma. Homes east of the city that notice industrial odours can try a carbon pleated filter.

- Spring: Change the filter after the heating season and again before poplar fluff arrives in late May.
- Summer: Keep a MERV 13 ready – northern wildfire smoke can reach the city overnight.
- Fall: Fit a fresh filter in September, before the first deep freeze.
- Winter: Check monthly; during cold snaps the furnace fan may run almost constantly.
Which MERV rating is right for your Edmonton home?
MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) measures how well a filter captures particles of different sizes under the ASHRAE 52.2 test standard. Higher numbers catch smaller particles. Most residential furnaces in Canada run well on MERV 8 to MERV 13 – here is how to choose:
| Rating | What it captures | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| MERV 8 | Dust, lint, pollen, mould spores and larger particles (3–10 microns) | Budget-friendly everyday protection, rental units, new-build dust |
| MERV 11 | Everything MERV 8 does plus pet dander, fine dust and some smoke (1–3 microns) | Most family homes, pets, seasonal allergies |
| MERV 13 | Fine particles down to 0.3–1 micron, including much of the PM2.5 in wildfire smoke | Asthma, allergies, wildfire smoke, newborns and seniors |
Not sure? Read our complete MERV rating guide. If you are moving up to MERV 13 on an older furnace, a deeper 2-inch or 4-inch filter keeps airflow healthy.
Popular furnace filter sizes in Edmonton
These are the most common furnace sizes in Edmonton-area homes. Many newer builds have media cabinets that take 4-inch or 5-inch filters, and character homes sometimes need special sizes.
How often to change your furnace filter in Edmonton
| Filter depth | Typical home | Pets, allergies or smoke |
|---|---|---|
| 1-inch | Every 1–3 months | Every 30–45 days |
| 2-inch | Every 3–4 months | Every 2 months |
| 4-inch | Every 6–9 months | Every 4–6 months |
| 5-inch | Every 9–12 months | Every 6 months |
Edmonton furnaces run so long each winter that a 1-inch filter rarely lasts three months between November and March – check it monthly and replace it as soon as it looks grey. See the full filter changing guide.

Edmonton air filter FAQ
What MERV rating do Edmonton homes need?
MERV 11 is a strong all-round choice for Edmonton's long heating season. Use MERV 13 during wildfire smoke or if someone at home has asthma or allergies, as long as your furnace is rated for it.
How often should I change my filter during an Edmonton winter?
Check 1-inch filters monthly from November to March, since the furnace runs almost non-stop; 4- and 5-inch media filters usually last 6–9 months here.
Does Edmonton get wildfire smoke?
Yes. Smoke from fires in northern Alberta, BC, Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories has reached Edmonton in many recent summers. Keep a spare MERV 13 filter ready and see our wildfire smoke guide.
Will a furnace filter remove industrial odours?
Standard pleated filters capture particles such as dust and smoke, but not gases or most odours. For odour concerns, a carbon pleated filter is a better fit.
Can a filter help with poplar fluff and spring allergies?
Yes. A MERV 11 filter captures tree and grass pollen, and the fluff itself is easily caught. Change the filter at the start of the season – see our allergy season guide.
Is it safe to run a higher-MERV filter in extreme cold?
Yes, if your furnace is rated for it and the filter is changed on time. A clogged filter is the bigger risk – it restricts airflow and can cause the furnace to overheat and shut down on cold nights.
How much does shipping to Edmonton cost?
Orders to Edmonton ship for $35 flat rate. Most orders arrive in 3–9 business days, with no customs or duties because everything ships from within Canada.
Can you make custom-size filters for my Edmonton home or building?
Yes. Because we manufacture in Brampton, we can build non-standard and custom sizes to order – usually within about 3 weeks. Use our custom filter form or email info@canadianairfilters.com with your dimensions and MERV rating.
