Air quality in Gatineau

  • Bridge & commuter traffic
  • Wood stove smoke
  • River flooding & damp basements
  • Wildfire smoke
  • Tree pollen
  • Cold, dry winters

Gatineau sits on the north shore of the Ottawa River, directly across from Parliament Hill, and tens of thousands of people cross between the two cities every working day. The Champlain, Chaudière, Portage and Macdonald-Cartier bridges, plus Autoroute 50 and Autoroute 5, carry heavy commuter traffic, and neighbourhoods near the bridgeheads in Hull and along the 50 pick up a share of that exhaust. Hull also has a long industrial history, with paper making along the river shaping the city for more than a century.

Beyond the urban core, Gatineau quickly turns rural. Aylmer, Masson-Angers, Buckingham and the edges of Gatineau Park are full of homes heated partly or entirely with wood, and wood smoke can settle in the Ottawa and Gatineau river valleys on cold, calm nights. The Outaouais is also heavily forested, and smoke from Quebec's 2023 wildfires blanketed the region for days, pushing air quality to high-risk levels on both sides of the river.

Water is the other big factor. The spring floods of 2017 and 2019 soaked hundreds of homes in Pointe-Gatineau, Aylmer and other riverside areas, and many basements in low-lying neighbourhoods still fight dampness and musty smells. Combined with heavy tree pollen from the surrounding forests each spring, that makes a good pleated filter a smart investment here.

Gatineau climate, homes & HVAC systems

Gatineau has a cold continental climate: winters are long and frigid, with cold snaps well below −25 °C, and summers are warm and fairly humid, with July heat waves that keep heat pumps and air conditioners busy. The heating season typically runs from early October into late April.

The housing mix ranges from older wartime houses and plexes in the Île de Hull, to post-war bungalows and split-levels across the Gatineau and Hull sectors, to large newer subdivisions in Aylmer, the Plateau and the east end of the city. Like the rest of Quebec, many homes have electric baseboards, but central heat pumps and dual-energy systems are increasingly common, and rural homes on the city's edges often combine a forced-air system with a wood stove or oil back-up. The 2018 tornado that hit Mont-Bleu also led to a wave of rebuilt homes with modern, tighter HVAC systems.

MERV 11 year-round, MERV 13 for wood smoke and wildfire season

For most Gatineau homes, MERV 11 is enough to trap household dust, forest pollen and basement spores without slowing down a heat pump or older electric furnace. Use MERV 13 during wildfire smoke, in neighbourhoods where wood stoves are common, or for anyone with asthma. Homes recovering from flooding should change filters more often until the basement is dry.

Seasonal filter tips for Gatineau

  • Spring: Change the filter after the spring thaw and keep an eye on damp basements while the river is high.
  • Summer: Keep a spare MERV 13 for wildfire smoke and run the heat pump to control humidity on muggy days.
  • Fall: Install a fresh filter before the first cold nights of early October.
  • Winter: Check monthly during deep cold snaps, and more often if neighbours burn wood.

Which MERV rating is right for your Gatineau home?

MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) measures how well a filter captures particles of different sizes under the ASHRAE 52.2 test standard. Higher numbers catch smaller particles. Most residential furnaces in Canada run well on MERV 8 to MERV 13 – here is how to choose:

Rating What it captures Best for
MERV 8 Dust, lint, pollen, mould spores and larger particles (3–10 microns) Budget-friendly everyday protection, rental units, new-build dust
MERV 11 Everything MERV 8 does plus pet dander, fine dust and some smoke (1–3 microns) Most family homes, pets, seasonal allergies
MERV 13 Fine particles down to 0.3–1 micron, including much of the PM2.5 in wildfire smoke Asthma, allergies, wildfire smoke, newborns and seniors

Not sure? Read our complete MERV rating guide. If you are moving up to MERV 13 on an older furnace, a deeper 2-inch or 4-inch filter keeps airflow healthy.

Popular furnace filter sizes in Gatineau

These sizes fit most Gatineau furnaces and central heat pump air handlers. Older Hull plexes and retrofitted systems may need special sizes, which we make to order in Brampton.

How to measure: the size printed on the filter frame (e.g. 16x25x1) is the nominal size; the real filter is usually about ½" smaller (15½ x 24½ x ¾). Order by the printed size, or measure your old filter and use our size search. Odd size? We build special and custom sizes to order.

How often to change your furnace filter in Gatineau

Filter depth Typical home Pets, allergies or smoke
1-inch Every 1–3 months Every 30–45 days
2-inch Every 3–4 months Every 2 months
4-inch Every 6–9 months Every 4–6 months
5-inch Every 9–12 months Every 6 months

If your Gatineau home burns wood, or your basement was affected by flooding, check your filter every month – both load filters faster than normal. See the full filter changing guide.

Gatineau air filter FAQ

Do you ship to Gatineau from Ontario?

Yes. Everything is made in Brampton and ships across the Ottawa River to Gatineau with no customs or duties. Shipping cost is shown below and at checkout. On the Ottawa side? See our Ottawa page.

Which MERV rating is best for Gatineau homes?

MERV 11 for everyday use. Switch to MERV 13 during wildfire smoke, in wood-burning areas such as Aylmer and Cantley, or if someone at home has asthma or allergies.

My basement flooded – should I change my filter?

Yes. After flooding or water damage, replace the filter once the space is dry and check it monthly for a while, since mould spores and dust from clean-up can load it quickly. A filter helps, but it can't fix ongoing moisture.

Does wood smoke from neighbours affect indoor air?

It can, especially on cold, still nights when smoke settles in the valleys. Switching to MERV 13 for the winter and running the furnace fan continuously on those nights helps clean the smoke that leaks in.

Did the 2023 wildfires affect Gatineau?

Yes. Smoke from Quebec's 2023 fires pushed air quality in the Gatineau–Ottawa area into the high-risk range on several days. Keep a spare MERV 13 ready – see our wildfire smoke guide.

Can federal buildings and contractors order in bulk?

Yes. We supply pleated, pocket, rigid cell and V-bank filters for offices, institutions and multi-unit buildings. Request a bulk quote with your sizes and quantities.

How much does shipping to Gatineau cost?

Orders to Gatineau ship for $35 on orders under $250 · $60 on orders $250+. Most orders arrive in 3–9 business days, with no customs or duties because everything ships from within Canada.

Can you make custom-size filters for my Gatineau home or building?

Yes. Because we manufacture in Brampton, we can build non-standard and custom sizes to order – usually within about 3 weeks. Use our custom filter form or email info@canadianairfilters.com with your dimensions and MERV rating.
