Air quality in Kelowna

  • Wildfire smoke
  • Winter valley inversions
  • Dry hillside dust
  • Orchard & vineyard burning
  • Grass & tree pollen
  • Highway 97 traffic

Wildfire smoke is the defining air quality issue in Kelowna. The city lives with the memory of the 2003 Okanagan Mountain Park fire and the 2023 McDougall Creek fire that forced evacuations across West Kelowna, Lake Country and parts of Kelowna itself. Even in years without local fires, smoke from blazes elsewhere in BC and Washington State regularly settles into the valley in July and August, and the AQHI can sit in the high-risk range for days. Fine smoke particles pass through basic fibreglass filters, so a pleated MERV 13 filter is a sensible summer standard here.

Geography plays a big role year-round. Kelowna sits on the shore of Okanagan Lake in a long, narrow valley, and in winter cold air pools beneath warmer air above – the familiar grey lid of valley cloud. These inversions trap wood stove smoke, vehicle exhaust from Highway 97 and Harvey Avenue, and road dust close to the ground, sometimes for a week or more.

The semi-arid climate brings its own particles: dust off dry hillsides, gravel roads and construction sites in growing neighbourhoods like the Upper Mission, Glenmore and Black Mountain. Orchards and vineyards add pruning-burn smoke in spring, and grass, pine and tree pollens are heavy from April through June. Closing up the house in summer and letting the AC filter the air is often the best way to stay comfortable.

Kelowna climate, homes & HVAC systems

Kelowna has a semi-arid climate with hot, sunny summers – often among the hottest in Canada – and moderately cold, cloudy winters. Air conditioning is close to essential from June to September, and the furnace runs from October through April. That means the HVAC fan, and your filter, are busy for most of the year.

Most detached homes in Rutland, Glenmore and the Mission run natural gas furnaces paired with central AC, while newer homes in Kettle Valley, Wilden and Black Mountain increasingly use heat pumps with gas backup and an HRV. The condo boom downtown and in the South Pandosy area brought plenty of in-suite heat pumps and fan coils with thin, non-standard filters. Out in the orchards and on rural properties, propane furnaces and wood stoves are still common.

MERV 13 through smoke season, MERV 11 the rest of the year

Kelowna homes should run MERV 13 from June to September, when wildfire smoke is most likely. In the cooler months, MERV 11 handles dust, pollen and pet dander with less airflow restriction. If your furnace has a deep media cabinet, a 4-inch filter lets you run MERV 13 all year without strain.

Seasonal filter tips for Kelowna

  • Spring: Replace the filter in April as orchard burning, pollen and spring dust arrive.
  • Summer: Install MERV 13 by late June, keep a spare, and run the fan continuously on smoky days.
  • Fall: Change out the smoke-season filter before the furnace starts in October.
  • Winter: During long inversions, keep windows closed and check the filter monthly.

Which MERV rating is right for your Kelowna home?

MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) measures how well a filter captures particles of different sizes under the ASHRAE 52.2 test standard. Higher numbers catch smaller particles. Most residential furnaces in Canada run well on MERV 8 to MERV 13 – here is how to choose:

Rating What it captures Best for
MERV 8 Dust, lint, pollen, mould spores and larger particles (3–10 microns) Budget-friendly everyday protection, rental units, new-build dust
MERV 11 Everything MERV 8 does plus pet dander, fine dust and some smoke (1–3 microns) Most family homes, pets, seasonal allergies
MERV 13 Fine particles down to 0.3–1 micron, including much of the PM2.5 in wildfire smoke Asthma, allergies, wildfire smoke, newborns and seniors

Not sure? Read our complete MERV rating guide. If you are moving up to MERV 13 on an older furnace, a deeper 2-inch or 4-inch filter keeps airflow healthy.

Popular furnace filter sizes in Kelowna

These are the most common sizes in Kelowna-area homes. Many newer houses use media cabinets that take 4-inch or 5-inch filters, and downtown condos often need special sizes.

How to measure: the size printed on the filter frame (e.g. 16x25x1) is the nominal size; the real filter is usually about ½" smaller (15½ x 24½ x ¾). Order by the printed size, or measure your old filter and use our size search. Odd size? We build special and custom sizes to order.

How often to change your furnace filter in Kelowna

Filter depth Typical home Pets, allergies or smoke
1-inch Every 1–3 months Every 30–45 days
2-inch Every 3–4 months Every 2 months
4-inch Every 6–9 months Every 4–6 months
5-inch Every 9–12 months Every 6 months

After a heavy smoke week, a Kelowna filter can be grey within days – check it as soon as the air clears and replace it rather than waiting for the usual schedule. See the full filter changing guide.

Kelowna air filter FAQ

What MERV rating is best for Kelowna homes?

MERV 13 during wildfire season (roughly June to September) and MERV 11 for the rest of the year suits most Kelowna homes. If you have a 4-inch media cabinet, MERV 13 year-round works well.

How should I prepare my home for Okanagan smoke season?

Install a fresh MERV 13 filter in late June, keep a spare, close windows when the AQHI rises and set your furnace fan to run continuously. Our wildfire smoke guide covers the details.

Why does Kelowna's air get worse in winter?

Temperature inversions trap cold air – and the wood smoke, exhaust and dust in it – under a layer of warmer air in the valley. A good filter helps keep those particles out of your home while the inversion lasts.

Can a furnace filter remove the smell of smoke?

Pleated filters capture particles but not odours. For the lingering smell after a smoke event, a carbon pleated filter helps.

Does my air conditioner use the same filter as my furnace?

In most Kelowna homes, yes – the AC coil sits on top of the furnace and both share one filter, so it works all summer as well as all winter.

Do you supply wineries and packing houses?

Yes. We ship commercial pleated, pocket and carbon filters in bulk to wineries, packing houses and other agricultural businesses. Contact us through our bulk orders page.

How much does shipping to Kelowna cost?

Orders to Kelowna ship for $35 flat rate. Most orders arrive in 3–9 business days, with no customs or duties because everything ships from within Canada.

Can you make custom-size filters for my Kelowna home or building?

Yes. Because we manufacture in Brampton, we can build non-standard and custom sizes to order – usually within about 3 weeks. Use our custom filter form or email info@canadianairfilters.com with your dimensions and MERV rating.
