Air quality in Sudbury

  • Mining & smelter dust
  • Wildfire smoke
  • Wood stove smoke
  • Road sand & grit
  • Long heating season
  • Boreal pollen

Greater Sudbury was built on the nickel and copper deposits of the Sudbury Basin, and mining still defines the city. For much of the 20th century, smelter emissions left the landscape around Copper Cliff, Coniston and Falconbridge bare and blackened. Pollution controls, the retirement of the famous Superstack and one of the world's best-known regreening programs – millions of trees planted and acidic soils treated with lime – have transformed the area, and today Sudbury's air is far cleaner than its reputation suggests.

Even so, mines, mills, haul trucks, slag piles and gravel roads still produce dust, especially on dry, windy days near active operations. In winter, the city spreads plenty of sand and grit on its hills, and once the snowbanks melt in April that fine grit is swept up by traffic and wind. Wood stoves and fireplaces are common in outlying communities such as Hanmer, Val Caron, Chelmsford and Whitefish, and their smoke can settle in low areas on cold, still nights.

Sudbury is surrounded by boreal forest and more than 300 lakes, so the main summer threat is wildfire smoke. Fires across Northern Ontario regularly push smoke over the city, and in bad seasons the AQHI can stay in the high-risk range for days. Spring tree pollen from birch, poplar and pine also arrives in a short, intense burst once the snow is gone.

Sudbury climate, homes & HVAC systems

Sudbury has a cold continental climate with long, snowy winters and short, warm summers. Furnaces typically run from late September into May, and January nights often fall well below −25 °C. That long heating season means your furnace fan moves far more air each year than in Southern Ontario, and filters load up faster. Summers are short but can be hot, and more homes now have central air or heat pumps for the July and August heat.

Much of Sudbury's housing dates from the mining boom years: storey-and-a-half company houses in Copper Cliff, post-war bungalows in the Flour Mill, Donovan and Minnow Lake, and larger split-levels in the South End and New Sudbury. Most in-town homes heat with natural gas forced air, while outlying areas and camps on the lakes often rely on oil, propane, electric baseboard or wood. Newer homes in Lively, Walden and the South End typically have high-efficiency furnaces, HRVs and 4- or 5-inch media cabinets, and cold-climate heat pumps are increasingly common.

MERV 11 all winter, MERV 13 for smoke season

MERV 11 captures road grit, dust and wood smoke ash without restricting airflow during the long heating season. Keep a MERV 13 filter ready from June to September for wildfire smoke, and consider a 4-inch filter to cut down on mid-winter changes.

Seasonal filter tips for Sudbury

  • Spring: Replace the winter filter after the snowbanks melt and road grit starts to blow around in April and May.
  • Summer: Watch wildfire smoke forecasts and switch to MERV 13 when the AQHI climbs.
  • Fall: Put in a fresh filter in September – the furnace starts earlier here than in the south.
  • Winter: Check every month; the furnace may run almost nonstop through January and February.

Which MERV rating is right for your Sudbury home?

MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) measures how well a filter captures particles of different sizes under the ASHRAE 52.2 test standard. Higher numbers catch smaller particles. Most residential furnaces in Canada run well on MERV 8 to MERV 13 – here is how to choose:

Rating What it captures Best for
MERV 8 Dust, lint, pollen, mould spores and larger particles (3–10 microns) Budget-friendly everyday protection, rental units, new-build dust
MERV 11 Everything MERV 8 does plus pet dander, fine dust and some smoke (1–3 microns) Most family homes, pets, seasonal allergies
MERV 13 Fine particles down to 0.3–1 micron, including much of the PM2.5 in wildfire smoke Asthma, allergies, wildfire smoke, newborns and seniors

Not sure? Read our complete MERV rating guide. If you are moving up to MERV 13 on an older furnace, a deeper 2-inch or 4-inch filter keeps airflow healthy.

Popular furnace filter sizes in Sudbury

These sizes cover most Sudbury furnaces. Older company houses and lakeside camps often have non-standard filter slots, and newer homes usually take 4-inch or 5-inch filters.

How to measure: the size printed on the filter frame (e.g. 16x25x1) is the nominal size; the real filter is usually about ½" smaller (15½ x 24½ x ¾). Order by the printed size, or measure your old filter and use our size search. Odd size? We build special and custom sizes to order.

How often to change your furnace filter in Sudbury

Filter depth Typical home Pets, allergies or smoke
1-inch Every 1–3 months Every 30–45 days
2-inch Every 3–4 months Every 2 months
4-inch Every 6–9 months Every 4–6 months
5-inch Every 9–12 months Every 6 months

With an eight-month heating season, most Sudbury households go through more filters a year than homes in the south – stock up before winter so you're never caught without one. See the full filter changing guide.

Sudbury air filter FAQ

How often should I change my furnace filter in Sudbury?

Check 1-inch filters monthly from October to April and replace every 1–2 months. A 4-inch filter usually lasts 4–6 months through a Sudbury winter. See our filter changing guide.

What filter helps with wildfire smoke in Sudbury?

MERV 13 captures much of the fine smoke particles that reach homes in the north. Run your furnace fan continuously on smoky days and add a portable HEPA unit for bedrooms. Read our wildfire smoke guide.

Is Sudbury's air still polluted from mining?

Air quality has improved enormously thanks to modern pollution controls and decades of regreening. Dust from mining activity, gravel roads and winter sand still exists, which a pleated MERV 11 filter helps capture.

Do you ship to camps and homes outside the city?

Yes. We ship anywhere in Greater Sudbury and the surrounding area, including Chelmsford, Hanmer, Capreol, Wahnapitae and lakeside properties.

Can I use a pleated filter with a wood-fired or oil furnace?

Yes. Forced-air wood and oil furnaces use the same type of filter slot. Change the filter more often during heavy-use months, and keep it at MERV 8 or MERV 11 on older units.

Do you supply filters for mines and industrial sites?

Yes. We supply pleated, commercial and wire panel filters in bulk, plus custom sizes for equipment and enclosures. Request a bulk quote.

How much does shipping to Sudbury cost?

Orders to Sudbury ship for a $25 flat rate, and orders of $2,500 or more ship free. Most orders arrive in 3–9 business days.

Can you make custom-size filters for my Sudbury home or building?

Yes. Because we manufacture in Brampton, we can build non-standard and custom sizes to order – usually within about 3 weeks. Use our custom filter form or email info@canadianairfilters.com with your dimensions and MERV rating.
