Wildfire burning in a Canadian forest with a large plume of smoke rising above the trees

Air quality in Barrie

  • Long snow-belt heating season
  • Wood smoke from fireplaces
  • Highway 400 traffic
  • Wildfire smoke from the north
  • Spring tree pollen
  • Cottage-country dampness

Barrie sits on Kempenfelt Bay at the western end of Lake Simcoe, right at the gateway to cottage country. The city's air is cleaner than the GTA's on most days, but it has its own challenges. In winter, many homes in and around Barrie burn wood in fireplaces and stoves, and on cold, calm evenings that smoke can drift through whole neighbourhoods, especially in the low-lying areas near the bay.

Highway 400 is the main route between Toronto and Muskoka, so Friday and Sunday traffic on summer weekends is heavy right through the city, along with steady truck traffic on the 400 and Highway 11 corridors. Barrie's fast-growing south end has also seen years of subdivision construction, adding dust for residents of newer streets.

Barrie is much closer to the forests of Muskoka and northern Ontario than Toronto is, and smoke from northern wildfires has drifted over Simcoe County in recent summers, sometimes turning the sky orange over the bay. Add heavy spring tree pollen and late-summer ragweed from surrounding farmland, and a good pleated filter earns its keep all year.

Barrie climate, homes & HVAC systems

Barrie lies in Ontario's snow belt, where lake-effect snow off Georgian Bay can bring heavy squalls. Winters are long, cold and snowy, so furnaces here run hard from fall well into spring and filters load up faster than in the city. Summers are warm and pleasant, with humidity rising near the lake.

Housing ranges from older brick homes in Allandale and around downtown, many with older furnaces and 1-inch filter racks, to the large 1980s–2000s subdivisions in the north and east ends and newer homes in the south end with high-efficiency furnaces, central air and HRVs. Around the city, Innisfil, Oro-Medonte and Springwater have many cottages and rural homes heated with propane, oil or wood, and seasonal cottages that sit closed all winter need a fresh filter on opening weekend.

MERV 11 all winter, MERV 13 for smoke

MERV 11 handles household dust and pollen through Barrie's long heating season. Keep a MERV 13 on hand for wildfire smoke days, or use it year-round if you live near neighbours who burn wood or anyone at home has asthma.

Seasonal filter tips for Barrie

  • Spring: Swap out the filter that worked all winter, and change cottage filters on opening weekend.
  • Summer: Watch for northern wildfire smoke and switch to MERV 13 when it arrives.
  • Fall: New filter before the furnace starts – and before closing the cottage.
  • Winter: Long, cold snow-belt months mean checking the filter every few weeks.

Which MERV rating is right for your Barrie home?

MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) measures how well a filter captures particles of different sizes under the ASHRAE 52.2 test standard. Higher numbers catch smaller particles. Most residential furnaces in Canada run well on MERV 8 to MERV 13 – here is how to choose:

Rating What it captures Best for
MERV 8 Dust, lint, pollen, mould spores and larger particles (3–10 microns) Budget-friendly everyday protection, rental units, new-build dust
MERV 11 Everything MERV 8 does plus pet dander, fine dust and some smoke (1–3 microns) Most family homes, pets, seasonal allergies
MERV 13 Fine particles down to 0.3–1 micron, including much of the PM2.5 in wildfire smoke Asthma, allergies, wildfire smoke, newborns and seniors

Not sure? Read our complete MERV rating guide. If you are moving up to MERV 13 on an older furnace, a deeper 2-inch or 4-inch filter keeps airflow healthy.

Popular furnace filter sizes in Barrie

These are the standard sizes in most Barrie homes, while many newer south-end homes use 5-inch media filters. Cottages and older properties sometimes have odd-sized returns – we make special sizes too.

How to measure: the size printed on the filter frame (e.g. 16x25x1) is the nominal size; the real filter is usually about ½" smaller (15½ x 24½ x ¾). Order by the printed size, or measure your old filter and use our size search. Odd size? We build special and custom sizes to order.

How often to change your furnace filter in Barrie

Filter depth Typical home Pets, allergies or smoke
1-inch Every 1–3 months Every 30–45 days
2-inch Every 3–4 months Every 2 months
4-inch Every 6–9 months Every 4–6 months
5-inch Every 9–12 months Every 6 months

Because Barrie's heating season is longer than Toronto's, check 1-inch filters monthly from November to March, and change cottage filters at opening and closing. See the full filter changing guide.

Barrie air filter FAQ

How often should I change my filter in Barrie?

Barrie's long heating season means filters fill up faster. Check 1-inch filters monthly in winter and replace every 1–3 months; 4- and 5-inch filters usually last 6–12 months. See our filter changing guide.

What filter should I use if I have a wood stove or fireplace?

A MERV 11 or MERV 13 filter on your furnace helps capture fine particles that escape into the home. Make sure your stove or fireplace is properly vented and maintained – a filter is not a substitute for that.

Do cottages need a different filter?

Not usually, but cottage furnaces often sit idle for months and collect dust. Replace the filter when you open up for the season, and measure carefully – older cottage systems may need a custom size.

Does Barrie get wildfire smoke?

Yes, smoke from wildfires in northern Ontario and beyond has reached Simcoe County in recent summers. Keep a spare MERV 13 filter ready and run your system with windows closed on smoky days.

What MERV rating is best for a Barrie home?

MERV 11 suits most homes. Choose MERV 13 for wildfire smoke, wood smoke nearby, asthma or allergies, and MERV 8 if you have an older furnace that struggles with airflow.

Can I get filters for a business or rental property in Barrie?

Yes. Property managers and landlords can order common sizes in bulk or request a quote on our bulk order page.

How much does shipping to Barrie cost?
