Air quality in Nova Scotia

  • Damp maritime air & mould
  • Coastal storms
  • Wildfire smoke
  • Wood & oil heat
  • Power plant emissions
  • Farm & orchard pollen

Almost every part of Nova Scotia is within an hour or so of the sea, and that ocean air is the biggest factor in the province's indoor air. Fog is common along the Atlantic coast and the South Shore, humidity stays high from spring to fall, and many older homes have fieldstone, rubble or block foundations that let moisture in. Mould and mildew in basements – and the musty air that a forced-air system pulls from them – are among the most common complaints from Yarmouth to Sydney.

Wildfire is now a real concern too. In 2023 the Tantallon fire on the edge of Halifax and the Barrington Lake fire in Shelburne County – the largest recorded in the province – forced evacuations and filled the sky with smoke across much of mainland Nova Scotia. Rural homes also burn a lot of wood in winter, and smoke can collect in valleys like the Annapolis Valley and the Margaree on calm, cold nights.

Industry has shaped local air over the years, from coal mining and steel making in Cape Breton to pulp and paper in Pictou County and the coal-fired generating stations that still supply part of the province's power. Agriculture matters in the Annapolis Valley, where orchards, farm fields and livestock bring pollen and dust in season. And because Nova Scotia is so heavily forested, spring tree pollen from birch, maple and alder is intense almost everywhere.

Nova Scotia climate, homes & HVAC systems

Nova Scotia's climate is moderated by the ocean: winters are cold but milder than inland Canada, with frequent freeze-thaw cycles, mixed snow and rain, and strong nor'easters. Summers are mild to warm and often humid, with cooler, foggier weather on the Atlantic side and warmer water along the Northumberland Strait. Hurricanes and post-tropical storms such as Juan in 2003 and Fiona in 2022 can bring long power outages and water damage.

Heating is a mix unique to the region. Oil-fired furnaces and boilers are still common, especially in older and rural homes, though heat pumps have spread rapidly in recent years – often added alongside the oil system. Electric baseboards are common in apartments and newer homes, and wood or pellet stoves provide primary or back-up heat in many rural households. Housing ranges from 19th-century wood-frame homes in Lunenburg, Truro and the Valley, to post-war bungalows, to new subdivisions around Halifax, Truro and Antigonish.

MERV 11 for damp-season spores, MERV 13 for smoke and allergies

MERV 11 captures mould spores, pollen and household dust for most Nova Scotia homes without straining older systems. Use MERV 13 during wildfire smoke or for anyone with asthma. Got an older oil furnace? Many were designed for low-resistance filters, so MERV 8 may suit it better – your furnace technician can confirm at the annual service.

Seasonal filter tips for Nova Scotia

  • Spring: Damp and foggy – check the basement for musty smells and replace the filter if it looks grey.
  • Summer: Run a dehumidifier or your heat pump's dry mode, and keep a spare MERV 13 for smoke.
  • Fall: Put in a fresh filter before heating season and again after any big storm or power outage.
  • Winter: Check monthly while the furnace or heat pump runs daily, especially in homes that also burn wood.

Which MERV rating is right for your Nova Scotia home?

MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) measures how well a filter captures particles of different sizes under the ASHRAE 52.2 test standard. Higher numbers catch smaller particles. Most residential furnaces in Canada run well on MERV 8 to MERV 13 – here is how to choose:

Rating What it captures Best for
MERV 8 Dust, lint, pollen, mould spores and larger particles (3–10 microns) Budget-friendly everyday protection, rental units, new-build dust
MERV 11 Everything MERV 8 does plus pet dander, fine dust and some smoke (1–3 microns) Most family homes, pets, seasonal allergies
MERV 13 Fine particles down to 0.3–1 micron, including much of the PM2.5 in wildfire smoke Asthma, allergies, wildfire smoke, newborns and seniors

Not sure? Read our complete MERV rating guide. If you are moving up to MERV 13 on an older furnace, a deeper 2-inch or 4-inch filter keeps airflow healthy.

Popular furnace filter sizes in Nova Scotia

These are common sizes for Nova Scotia furnaces and ducted heat pump air handlers. Older oil furnaces often use odd sizes – we build special and custom filters to fit.

How to measure: the size printed on the filter frame (e.g. 16x25x1) is the nominal size; the real filter is usually about ½" smaller (15½ x 24½ x ¾). Order by the printed size, or measure your old filter and use our size search. Odd size? We build special and custom sizes to order.

How often to change your furnace filter in Nova Scotia

Filter depth Typical home Pets, allergies or smoke
1-inch Every 1–3 months Every 30–45 days
2-inch Every 3–4 months Every 2 months
4-inch Every 6–9 months Every 4–6 months
5-inch Every 9–12 months Every 6 months

After a storm, flood or power outage that left the basement damp, replace the filter once things dry out – spores and dust from clean-up load filters fast. See the full filter changing guide.

Nova Scotia air filter FAQ

What MERV rating is best for Nova Scotia homes?

For the typical Nova Scotia house, MERV 11 balances good capture of spores and pollen with easy airflow. Keep MERV 13 for smoky days or for households dealing with asthma, provided the furnace or air handler can handle the extra resistance.

Do you have filters for oil furnaces?

Yes – oil-fired forced-air furnaces take the same pleated filters as gas or electric units. Older models from the 1970s and 80s sometimes have unusual slots, and we can make non-standard sizes to match.

Can a filter help with mould in a humid climate?

A good filter captures airborne mould spores, but it can't control humidity. Use a dehumidifier or your heat pump's dry mode, fix leaks and drainage, and change the filter regularly through damp seasons.

I added a heat pump to my oil furnace – do I need a different filter?

If the heat pump is ducted and shares the furnace's air handler, it uses the same filter slot. Expect to change it sooner than before, since the blower now runs in summer too. Ductless heads have their own washable screens.

Does Nova Scotia get wildfire smoke?

Yes. The 2023 Tantallon and Barrington Lake fires brought heavy smoke to much of the province. Keep a spare MERV 13 ready and see our wildfire smoke guide.

Will I pay customs or duties on orders to Nova Scotia?

No. It's a domestic shipment from Ontario to Nova Scotia, so there is no border, no brokerage and no surprise bill on delivery.

How much does shipping to Nova Scotia cost?

Orders to Nova Scotia ship for $45 flat rate. Most orders arrive in 3–9 business days, with no customs or duties because everything ships from within Canada.

Can you make custom-size filters for my Nova Scotia home or building?

Yes. Because we manufacture in Brampton, we can build non-standard and custom sizes to order – usually within about 3 weeks. Use our custom filter form or email info@canadianairfilters.com with your dimensions and MERV rating.
