Air quality in Halton Region

  • QEW, 403, 407 & 401 corridors
  • Lakeshore humidity
  • Escarpment & farm pollen
  • Quarry & construction dust
  • Rail & logistics traffic
  • Wildfire smoke

Halton Region stretches from the Lake Ontario shore at Oakville and Burlington up over the Niagara Escarpment to Milton, Georgetown and Acton. Four major highways cross it – the QEW, the 403, the 407 and the 401 – and they meet at busy interchanges like the Freeman Interchange in Burlington and the 401/407 junction near Milton. Living close to any of these means a steady load of traffic particles and diesel exhaust from the trucks serving the region's warehouses and distribution centres.

Industry is concentrated along the QEW in Oakville and Burlington, around the Milton and Halton Hills business parks, and in the limestone quarries along the Escarpment. Just across the bay, Hamilton's steel and harbour industries can affect air in south Burlington when the wind is from the west. Meanwhile, Milton and North Oakville have grown so quickly that new-build construction dust is a daily reality for thousands of families.

Halton also has a lot of green space: Bronte Creek, Sixteen Mile Creek and the Credit River valleys, the conservation areas at Kelso, Rattlesnake Point and Mount Nemo, and farmland across north Burlington, Milton and Halton Hills. That means strong tree pollen in spring, grass in June and ragweed in late summer – plus the wildfire smoke that has drifted across southern Ontario in recent years.

Halton Region climate, homes & HVAC systems

The lake keeps south Oakville and Burlington slightly milder and more humid, while the Escarpment communities of Milton, Georgetown and Acton see colder nights and more snow. Across the region, furnaces run from October through April and central air carries most homes through humid July and August heat, so filters are in use almost year-round.

Housing covers everything from century homes in downtown Oakville, Milton and Georgetown, to 1960s–80s suburbs in Burlington and Glen Abbey, to large newer houses in Alton Village, North Oakville and Milton with high-efficiency furnaces, HRVs and 4- or 5-inch media filters. Lakeshore condos rely on fan coils or heat pumps with smaller filters, and rural properties in north Halton may still heat with propane, oil or wood.

MERV 11 region-wide, MERV 13 near highways & construction

Seasonal filter tips for Halton Region

  • Spring: Install a new filter before Escarpment woodlands and street trees bloom in April.
  • Summer: On smoke or smog advisory days, close up and run the AC fan continuously.
  • Fall: Change filters before heating season, after the ragweed peak passes.
  • Winter: Check monthly during cold snaps, especially in colder north Halton communities.

Which MERV rating is right for your Halton Region home?

MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) measures how well a filter captures particles of different sizes under the ASHRAE 52.2 test standard. Higher numbers catch smaller particles. Most residential furnaces in Canada run well on MERV 8 to MERV 13 – here is how to choose:

Rating What it captures Best for
MERV 8 Dust, lint, pollen, mould spores and larger particles (3–10 microns) Budget-friendly everyday protection, rental units, new-build dust
MERV 11 Everything MERV 8 does plus pet dander, fine dust and some smoke (1–3 microns) Most family homes, pets, seasonal allergies
MERV 13 Fine particles down to 0.3–1 micron, including much of the PM2.5 in wildfire smoke Asthma, allergies, wildfire smoke, newborns and seniors

Not sure? Read our complete MERV rating guide. If you are moving up to MERV 13 on an older furnace, a deeper 2-inch or 4-inch filter keeps airflow healthy.

Popular furnace filter sizes in Halton Region

These sizes fit most Halton furnaces. Newer homes in Milton and North Oakville often use 5-inch media filters, while lakeshore condos may need special sizes.

How to measure: the size printed on the filter frame (e.g. 16x25x1) is the nominal size; the real filter is usually about ½" smaller (15½ x 24½ x ¾). Order by the printed size, or measure your old filter and use our size search. Odd size? We build special and custom sizes to order.

How often to change your furnace filter in Halton Region

Filter depth Typical home Pets, allergies or smoke
1-inch Every 1–3 months Every 30–45 days
2-inch Every 3–4 months Every 2 months
4-inch Every 6–9 months Every 4–6 months
5-inch Every 9–12 months Every 6 months

Across Halton, check filters more often if you live in an area that's still being built out or within a few hundred metres of a major highway. See the full filter changing guide.

Halton Region air filter FAQ

What MERV rating should I use in Halton Region?

MERV 11 suits most Halton homes. Use MERV 13 if you live near a major highway or construction, or if someone at home has asthma or allergies.

Does Hamilton's industry affect air quality in Halton?

South Burlington and Aldershot can pick up emissions from Hamilton Harbour when winds are from the west. Elsewhere in Halton, traffic and construction dust are the bigger factors.

Is all of Halton in your free delivery area?

Yes – Oakville, Burlington, Milton and Halton Hills are all within our free GTA delivery zone. Choose “Free GTA Delivery” at checkout.

Do you supply Halton schools, hospitals and long-term care homes?

Yes. We make pleated, pocket and rigid filters for institutional HVAC and offer volume pricing and scheduled deliveries through our bulk order program.

My new Milton or North Oakville home has a 5-inch filter – how often do I change it?

Usually every 6–12 months, but check it after the first few months in a new build, as construction dust loads it faster.

Do you have filters for lakeshore condos?

Yes. Condo fan coils and heat pumps often use thin, non-standard sizes. Measure your old filter and search our site, or see our condo air quality guide.

How much does shipping to Halton Region cost?

Free local delivery covers addresses within 60 km of our Brampton facility, which includes most of Halton Region. Choose “Free GTA Delivery” at checkout – if your address is outside the zone, Ontario's $25 flat rate applies (free on orders over $2,500).

Yes. Because we manufacture in Brampton, we can build non-standard and custom sizes to order – usually within about 3 weeks. Use our custom filter form or email info@canadianairfilters.com with your dimensions and MERV rating.
