Air quality in Whitewater Region

  • Wildfire smoke
  • Farm & manure odour
  • Ottawa River humidity
  • Wood stove smoke
  • Hay & ragweed pollen
  • Gravel road dust

Whitewater Region takes its name from the rapids of the Ottawa River, where rafting and kayaking draw visitors every summer near Foresters Falls and Beachburg. The township brings together the villages of Cobden and Beachburg with the rural communities of Westmeath, Haley Station and Foresters Falls, so its air is shaped by a mix of river, farmland and forest.

Agriculture is a big part of life here, with dairy, beef and crop farms spread across the township. That brings seasonal dust and manure odours, and heavy pollen from hay, grass and ragweed from June through September. Muskrat Lake at Cobden and the Ottawa River shoreline at Westmeath raise humidity in spring and fall, encouraging mould in older homes, cottages and basements. In winter, wood stoves and outdoor wood furnaces are common, and their smoke often lingers in low spots on still, cold days.

Wildfire smoke is a growing concern. Whitewater Region sits on the Ontario–Quebec border, and smoke from Quebec forest fires in June 2023 settled heavily over the township for days. Cottagers and full-time residents alike found that a pleated MERV 13 filter and a running furnace fan made a real difference to the air inside.

Whitewater Region climate, homes & HVAC systems

The climate is classic Upper Ottawa Valley: cold, snowy winters with nights well below -20°C, and warm, humid summers. Heating season runs from late September through May, and many homes now rely on heat pumps for both spring and fall heating and summer cooling, keeping the blower running much of the year.

Housing ranges from century farmhouses and older village homes in Cobden and Beachburg to 1970s–90s bungalows, newer country homes on large lots, and seasonal cottages along the Ottawa River and Muskrat Lake. Natural gas is limited, so most homes heat with propane or oil furnaces, wood stoves, electric baseboard or heat pumps. Many properties have private wells and septic systems, and newer homes are often tightly built with HRVs.

MERV 13 for smoke season, MERV 11 the rest of the year

With wildfire smoke now a regular summer risk, Whitewater Region homes benefit from a MERV 13 filter from June to September. MERV 11 handles farm dust, pollen and wood ash comfortably the rest of the year.

Seasonal filter tips for Whitewater Region

  • Spring: Swap filters once the snowmelt is done and field work starts kicking up dust.
  • Summer: Keep a MERV 13 filter in the furnace during smoke season and close the windows on advisory days.
  • Fall: Install a fresh filter before the wood stove and furnace start up for the season.
  • Winter: Check monthly – long heating cycles and wood heat clog filters faster than usual.

Which MERV rating is right for your Whitewater Region home?

MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) measures how well a filter captures particles of different sizes under the ASHRAE 52.2 test standard. Higher numbers catch smaller particles. Most residential furnaces in Canada run well on MERV 8 to MERV 13 – here is how to choose:

Rating What it captures Best for
MERV 8 Dust, lint, pollen, mould spores and larger particles (3–10 microns) Budget-friendly everyday protection, rental units, new-build dust
MERV 11 Everything MERV 8 does plus pet dander, fine dust and some smoke (1–3 microns) Most family homes, pets, seasonal allergies
MERV 13 Fine particles down to 0.3–1 micron, including much of the PM2.5 in wildfire smoke Asthma, allergies, wildfire smoke, newborns and seniors

Not sure? Read our complete MERV rating guide. If you are moving up to MERV 13 on an older furnace, a deeper 2-inch or 4-inch filter keeps airflow healthy.

Popular furnace filter sizes in Whitewater Region

Most homes in Whitewater Region use standard 1-inch furnace filters, but newer propane and heat pump systems often take 4-inch filters. Cottage air handlers and older units may need special sizes, which we can make to order.

How to measure: the size printed on the filter frame (e.g. 16x25x1) is the nominal size; the real filter is usually about ½" smaller (15½ x 24½ x ¾). Order by the printed size, or measure your old filter and use our size search. Odd size? We build special and custom sizes to order.

How often to change your furnace filter in Whitewater Region

Filter depth Typical home Pets, allergies or smoke
1-inch Every 1–3 months Every 30–45 days
2-inch Every 3–4 months Every 2 months
4-inch Every 6–9 months Every 4–6 months
5-inch Every 9–12 months Every 6 months

Homes beside active farmland or gravel roads should check filters every few weeks during planting and harvest, when dust levels are highest. See the full filter changing guide.

Whitewater Region air filter FAQ

Did the 2023 wildfire smoke affect Whitewater Region?

Yes. Smoke from Quebec forest fires blanketed the township for several days in June 2023. A MERV 13 filter, closed windows and a running furnace fan help reduce indoor smoke levels.

Do farm odours get through a furnace filter?

Standard pleated filters capture dust and particles but not odours. For manure or barn smells, a carbon pleated filter helps absorb odours as well as particles.

What filter should I use at my Ottawa River cottage?

A pleated MERV 11 filter is a good fit for cottages, which can collect dust and mould over the off-season. Change it each time you open the cottage.

Do heat pumps need different filters in rural homes?

Ducted heat pumps use the same pleated filters as furnaces – just match the size. Because they run year-round, check the filter monthly.

How do I measure my furnace filter?

Read the size printed on the frame, such as 20x25x1. If it's missing, measure length, width and depth and round up to the nearest inch.

Do you supply resorts and outfitters with bulk filters?

Yes. We supply pleated, pocket and wire panel filters in bulk with volume pricing. See our bulk orders page to set up an account.

How much does shipping to Whitewater Region cost?

Orders to Whitewater Region ship for a $25 flat rate, and orders of $2,500 or more ship free. Most orders arrive in 3–9 business days.

Can you make custom-size filters for my Whitewater Region home or building?

Yes. Because we manufacture in Brampton, we can build non-standard and custom sizes to order – usually within about 3 weeks. Use our custom filter form or email info@canadianairfilters.com with your dimensions and MERV rating.
