Air quality in Perth
- Tay River humidity
- Wood smoke
- Highway 7 traffic
- Tree & ragweed pollen
- Cottage-country wildfire smoke
- Pet dander
Perth was founded in 1816 as a military settlement for veterans of the War of 1812, and it is one of Ontario's best-preserved heritage towns, with limestone and sandstone buildings lining Gore Street and the Tay River. The Tay Canal links the town to the Rideau system at Lower Rideau Lake, and Stewart Park and the Tay Basin sit right in the heart of downtown. That water is a big part of Perth's charm – and it also means humid summers, morning fog and damp basements in older houses.
As the seat of Lanark County, Perth is a service centre for a wide rural area of farms, forests and lakes. Highway 7 carries traffic between Ottawa and Peterborough along the north side of town, but there is little heavy industry, so day-to-day air quality is generally good. The bigger factors are seasonal: heavy maple and poplar pollen in spring, ragweed from the surrounding farmland in late summer, and harvest dust in the fall.
Perth is on the edge of cottage country, with Christie, Otty and Big Rideau lakes close by, and the forests to the west mean wildfire smoke is a real concern in dry summers – smoke from Quebec and northern Ontario fires blanketed the area in 2023. In winter, wood stoves and fireplaces are common both in town and around the lakes, and smoke can linger in the Tay valley on still, frosty nights.
Perth climate, homes & HVAC systems
Perth has a cold eastern Ontario climate: long winters with frequent cold snaps and plenty of snow, and warm, humid summers that make central air or a heat pump worthwhile. The furnace usually runs from October to late April, so filters work hard through the heart of winter.
Many of Perth's homes are 19th-century stone, brick and frame houses, some with hot-water boilers and others with forced-air systems added over the decades, often with tight 1-inch filter slots. Post-war and newer subdivisions around the edges of town mostly run natural gas furnaces with central AC, HRVs and media filters. Outside town, homes and cottages on Christie, Otty and the Rideau lakes are on wells and rely on propane, oil, wood stoves, electric baseboards and ductless heat pumps.
MERV 11 for heritage homes, MERV 13 for pets & smoke
MERV 11 is a safe, effective choice for Perth's older furnaces, catching dust, pollen and pet dander. If you have several pets, allergies or asthma at home, or during wildfire smoke, switch to MERV 13. Pet owners can find more tips in our pet owner's filter guide.

- Spring: Install a fresh filter in April before maple and poplar pollen drifts along the Tay.
- Summer: Keep a spare MERV 13 for smoke advisories, especially if you also have a lake cottage to protect.
- Fall: Change the filter after leaf season and before the furnace takes over for the winter.
- Winter: Check monthly when the wood stove or fireplace is in regular use.
Which MERV rating is right for your Perth home?
MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) measures how well a filter captures particles of different sizes under the ASHRAE 52.2 test standard. Higher numbers catch smaller particles. Most residential furnaces in Canada run well on MERV 8 to MERV 13 – here is how to choose:
| Rating | What it captures | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| MERV 8 | Dust, lint, pollen, mould spores and larger particles (3–10 microns) | Budget-friendly everyday protection, rental units, new-build dust |
| MERV 11 | Everything MERV 8 does plus pet dander, fine dust and some smoke (1–3 microns) | Most family homes, pets, seasonal allergies |
| MERV 13 | Fine particles down to 0.3–1 micron, including much of the PM2.5 in wildfire smoke | Asthma, allergies, wildfire smoke, newborns and seniors |
Not sure? Read our complete MERV rating guide. If you are moving up to MERV 13 on an older furnace, a deeper 2-inch or 4-inch filter keeps airflow healthy.
Popular furnace filter sizes in Perth
Heritage homes in Perth often have forced-air systems added after construction, sometimes with odd filter sizes – check our special sizes if yours isn't standard. Newer homes typically use a 5-inch media filter.
How often to change your furnace filter in Perth
| Filter depth | Typical home | Pets, allergies or smoke |
|---|---|---|
| 1-inch | Every 1–3 months | Every 30–45 days |
| 2-inch | Every 3–4 months | Every 2 months |
| 4-inch | Every 6–9 months | Every 4–6 months |
| 5-inch | Every 9–12 months | Every 6 months |
Perth homes with dogs or cats, or a wood stove, should check filters every month in winter – pet hair and ash fill a 1-inch filter quickly. See the full filter changing guide.

Perth air filter FAQ
What MERV rating is best for a Perth home with pets?
MERV 11 handles pet hair and dander well for most homes. With several pets, or anyone with allergies or asthma, MERV 13 captures more of the fine dander that triggers symptoms.
My Perth home is a heritage stone house – what filter do I need?
Check the size printed on your current filter and match it. If your forced-air system was added later, the slot may be a non-standard size; we stock many special sizes and make custom filters to order.
What should I do for a lake cottage near Perth?
If the cottage has a forced-air furnace, replace the filter when you open up in spring. Ductless mini-splits have washable screens to rinse, and a portable HEPA unit helps on smoky days.
How do I protect my home from wildfire smoke in Perth?
Close windows, run the furnace fan continuously and use a MERV 13 filter. Our wildfire smoke guide has a full checklist.
How often should I change my filter in winter?
Check 1-inch filters monthly from December to March and replace them every 1–3 months. Homes with pets or a wood stove usually need changes every 4–6 weeks.
Can a furnace filter help with damp basement smells?
It traps airborne mould spores, but the moisture needs a dehumidifier. For musty odours, a carbon pleated filter can help.
How much does shipping to Perth cost?
Orders to Perth ship for a $25 flat rate, and orders of $2,500 or more ship free. Most orders arrive in 3–9 business days.
Can you make custom-size filters for my Perth home or building?
Yes. Because we manufacture in Brampton, we can build non-standard and custom sizes to order – usually within about 3 weeks. Use our custom filter form or email info@canadianairfilters.com with your dimensions and MERV rating.
