Air quality in Arnprior

  • Highway 417 & 17 traffic
  • Industrial plants
  • River-valley humidity
  • Pine & tree pollen
  • Wood smoke
  • Wildfire smoke

Arnprior grew up as a lumber town where the Madawaska River pours into the Ottawa at Chats Lake, and the rivers still shape its air today. Moist air off the water keeps humidity high in spring and fall, and low-lying neighbourhoods near the shoreline can trap fog and wood smoke on calm winter mornings. Gillies Grove, the old-growth white pine forest right in town, and the many mature trees along Arnprior's streets make for a heavy spring and early-summer pollen season.

Today the town is a manufacturing centre for the Ottawa Valley, with aerospace, plastics and other industrial plants, and it sits right on Highway 417 and Highway 17, the main route between Ottawa and the Upper Valley. Truck traffic, industrial emissions and construction dust from the steady growth of new subdivisions all add fine particles to the local air, even though it remains far cleaner than in a big city.

Arnprior has also seen its share of wildfire smoke. In June 2023, smoke from Quebec's fires turned the sky over the Ottawa Valley hazy for days and pushed air quality into the high-risk range. A pleated MERV 11 or MERV 13 filter in your furnace or air handler is one of the simplest ways to keep that smoke – and the everyday dust and pollen – from settling into your home.

Arnprior climate, homes & HVAC systems

Arnprior has cold, snowy winters with regular cold snaps below -20°C, and warm, often humid summers. Most homes run their furnace from October to April or May and their AC or heat pump through July and August, so the HVAC fan is busy most of the year and the filter is doing work in every season.

Older neighbourhoods near downtown and the river have brick and frame homes from the lumber era, many converted to natural gas forced air with 1-inch filter slots. Post-war and 1970s–80s bungalows fill the middle of town, and the newer subdivisions on Arnprior's west and south sides are tightly built homes with high-efficiency gas furnaces, central air, HRVs and often 4- or 5-inch media cabinets. Townhomes and apartments for seniors and young families are a growing share of the housing as well.

MERV 11 for most homes, MERV 13 for new builds and smoke

MERV 11 captures pollen, dust and pet dander without straining older furnaces in Arnprior's established neighbourhoods. Newer homes with deeper media cabinets can run MERV 13 year-round, which is also the best choice during wildfire smoke.

Seasonal filter tips for Arnprior

  • Spring: Put in a fresh filter before the white pine and maple pollen peaks in May.
  • Summer: On smoke advisory days, keep windows shut and run the AC or fan to filter the air.
  • Fall: Replace your filter before the furnace's first cold start in October.
  • Winter: Check monthly – the furnace runs almost nonstop during deep January cold.

Which MERV rating is right for your Arnprior home?

MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) measures how well a filter captures particles of different sizes under the ASHRAE 52.2 test standard. Higher numbers catch smaller particles. Most residential furnaces in Canada run well on MERV 8 to MERV 13 – here is how to choose:

Rating What it captures Best for
MERV 8 Dust, lint, pollen, mould spores and larger particles (3–10 microns) Budget-friendly everyday protection, rental units, new-build dust
MERV 11 Everything MERV 8 does plus pet dander, fine dust and some smoke (1–3 microns) Most family homes, pets, seasonal allergies
MERV 13 Fine particles down to 0.3–1 micron, including much of the PM2.5 in wildfire smoke Asthma, allergies, wildfire smoke, newborns and seniors

Not sure? Read our complete MERV rating guide. If you are moving up to MERV 13 on an older furnace, a deeper 2-inch or 4-inch filter keeps airflow healthy.

Popular furnace filter sizes in Arnprior

Older Arnprior homes mostly use 1-inch filters, while many furnaces in the newer subdivisions have 4-inch or 5-inch media filters. If you just moved into a new build, check the furnace cabinet – builders often install deep-media slots.

How to measure: the size printed on the filter frame (e.g. 16x25x1) is the nominal size; the real filter is usually about ½" smaller (15½ x 24½ x ¾). Order by the printed size, or measure your old filter and use our size search. Odd size? We build special and custom sizes to order.

How often to change your furnace filter in Arnprior

Filter depth Typical home Pets, allergies or smoke
1-inch Every 1–3 months Every 30–45 days
2-inch Every 3–4 months Every 2 months
4-inch Every 6–9 months Every 4–6 months
5-inch Every 9–12 months Every 6 months

New homes in Arnprior's growing subdivisions should have the filter checked every month for the first year, since drywall and construction dust load filters quickly. See the full filter changing guide.

Arnprior air filter FAQ

What MERV rating do Arnprior homes need?

MERV 11 works well for most Arnprior homes. If you have a newer high-efficiency furnace, allergies or asthma in the family, or wildfire smoke outside, MERV 13 offers finer filtration.

My new Arnprior home has a thick filter in the furnace – what size is it?

Many builders install 4- or 5-inch media cabinets. Check the size printed on the filter frame (for example 16x25x5) and order that size – we stock the common 5-inch and 4-inch filters.

Is pollen bad in Arnprior?

With Gillies Grove, mature street trees and surrounding farmland, spring tree pollen and summer grass pollen are noticeable. A fresh pleated filter before May helps a lot.

Does industrial activity affect air quality in Arnprior?

Arnprior's air is generally good, but industry, traffic on Highways 417 and 17 and construction add fine particles. A MERV 11 or MERV 13 filter captures a large share of them indoors.

Do you supply filters to Arnprior manufacturers and health care facilities?

Yes. We supply pleated, pocket, V-bank and HEPA filters in bulk. See our bulk orders page for business accounts.

Will a better filter help with smoke from wildfires?

Yes. A MERV 13 filter captures much of the fine particulate in wildfire smoke when windows are closed and the furnace fan is running.

How much does shipping to Arnprior cost?

Orders to Arnprior ship for a $25 flat rate, and orders of $2,500 or more ship free. Most orders arrive in 3–9 business days.

Can you make custom-size filters for my Arnprior home or building?

Yes. Because we manufacture in Brampton, we can build non-standard and custom sizes to order – usually within about 3 weeks. Use our custom filter form or email info@canadianairfilters.com with your dimensions and MERV rating.
