Air quality in McNab/Braeside

  • Ottawa River humidity
  • Wood heat
  • Field & roadside pollen
  • Highway 17 traffic
  • Cottage-season mustiness
  • Wildfire smoke

McNab/Braeside sits where the Madawaska River meets the Ottawa, wrapping around the Town of Arnprior. Its shoreline along Chats Lake – at Braeside, Sand Point and the many waterfront roads in between – brings beautiful views but also damp air off the river, especially in spring and fall, when basements and cottages can pick up a musty smell and mould spores find their way into the ductwork.

Inland, the township is a patchwork of hay and cattle farms, gravel side roads and mixed forest toward Burnstown and White Lake. That means grass and hay pollen in early summer, ragweed in August and road dust whenever the weather turns dry. Highway 17 carries a steady stream of trucks between Ottawa and the Upper Ottawa Valley, and homes close to it see more exhaust and fine particles than those tucked back on the concessions.

Like the rest of the Ottawa Valley, McNab/Braeside was blanketed by smoke from Quebec's forest fires in June 2023, and summer smoke events are now a regular risk. In winter, wood stoves and outdoor wood furnaces are common, and their smoke tends to hang in low spots along the river on still, cold mornings. A good pleated filter in your furnace is the easiest way to keep all of that out of the air you breathe indoors.

McNab/Braeside climate, homes & HVAC systems

Winters in McNab/Braeside are cold and snowy, with January nights often dropping below -25°C, while July and August bring warm, humid stretches that make central air or a heat pump worth having. The furnace typically runs from early October into May, and many households now use a heat pump for shoulder-season heating and summer cooling, so the blower – and the filter – are in use almost all year.

Homes range from 19th-century stone farmhouses and older homes in Braeside to post-war bungalows, newer country estates on large lots and a wide variety of cottages around White Lake and along the river. Natural gas reaches only parts of the township, so propane and oil furnaces, electric baseboard with a wood stove, and air-source heat pumps are all common, and many properties rely on private wells and septic systems.

Seasonal filter tips for McNab/Braeside

  • Spring: After the spring freshet on the Ottawa River, swap in a fresh filter to deal with damp-season mould and early tree pollen.
  • Summer: Opening the cottage? Replace the filter before the first long weekend so a winter's worth of dust isn't blown around.
  • Fall: Change the filter before Thanksgiving, when cold nights start the furnace cycling again.
  • Winter: Check monthly during cold snaps, and more often if a wood stove is running.

Which MERV rating is right for your McNab/Braeside home?

MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) measures how well a filter captures particles of different sizes under the ASHRAE 52.2 test standard. Higher numbers catch smaller particles. Most residential furnaces in Canada run well on MERV 8 to MERV 13 – here is how to choose:

Rating What it captures Best for
MERV 8 Dust, lint, pollen, mould spores and larger particles (3–10 microns) Budget-friendly everyday protection, rental units, new-build dust
MERV 11 Everything MERV 8 does plus pet dander, fine dust and some smoke (1–3 microns) Most family homes, pets, seasonal allergies
MERV 13 Fine particles down to 0.3–1 micron, including much of the PM2.5 in wildfire smoke Asthma, allergies, wildfire smoke, newborns and seniors

Not sure? Read our complete MERV rating guide. If you are moving up to MERV 13 on an older furnace, a deeper 2-inch or 4-inch filter keeps airflow healthy.

Popular furnace filter sizes in McNab/Braeside

Most McNab/Braeside furnaces take standard 1-inch filters, but many newer propane and heat pump systems use deeper 5-inch or 4-inch filters. Older cottage equipment often needs an odd size – we can build it for you.

How to measure: the size printed on the filter frame (e.g. 16x25x1) is the nominal size; the real filter is usually about ½" smaller (15½ x 24½ x ¾). Order by the printed size, or measure your old filter and use our size search. Odd size? We build special and custom sizes to order.

How often to change your furnace filter in McNab/Braeside

Filter depth Typical home Pets, allergies or smoke

2-inch Every 3–4 months Every 2 months
4-inch Every 6–9 months Every 4–6 months
5-inch Every 9–12 months Every 6 months

Riverside and cottage homes that sit closed for part of the year should get a fresh filter every time they are opened up, and a check every month while in use. See the full filter changing guide.

McNab/Braeside air filter FAQ

What MERV rating works best for a McNab/Braeside home?

MERV 11 is a strong all-round choice for the area's mix of pollen, dust and river humidity. Use MERV 13 during smoke events or if anyone has asthma or allergies.

My White Lake cottage smells musty when we open it – will a filter help?

A fresh pleated filter captures mould spores and dust that build up over winter, but also air the place out and run a dehumidifier. Changing the filter each time you open the cottage makes a noticeable difference.

Does a heat pump need its filter changed as often as a furnace?

Usually more often, since a ducted heat pump runs in both summer and winter. Check it every month and replace a 1-inch filter every one to two months.

Can I use a high-MERV filter on an older propane furnace?

Yes, as long as the filter fits well and you change it on schedule. If the furnace is older or struggles with airflow, choose a deeper 2-inch filter where the slot allows.

How do I find my filter size?

Look for the size printed on the cardboard frame, such as 20x25x1. If it's worn off, measure length, width and depth and round up to the nearest inch.

Do you supply filters for barns and workshops?

Yes. We make pleated filters, wire panels and media rolls for shops, barns and unit heaters, and offer bulk pricing.

How much does shipping to McNab/Braeside cost?

Orders to McNab/Braeside ship for a $25 flat rate, and orders of $2,500 or more ship free. Most orders arrive in 3–9 business days.

Can you make custom-size filters for my McNab/Braeside home or building?

Yes. Because we manufacture in Brampton, we can build non-standard and custom sizes to order – usually within about 3 weeks. Use our custom filter form or email info@canadianairfilters.com with your dimensions and MERV rating.
