Air quality in Montague Township
- Barn & field dust
- Oil & propane furnace soot
- Wood smoke
- Rideau wetland humidity
- Ragweed pollen
- Wildfire smoke
Montague Township wraps around Smiths Falls to the north and east, a large, thinly populated stretch of Lanark County farmland, bush and wetland bordered by the Rideau River. Settled by Loyalists in the late 1700s, it has no single town centre; instead, people live on farms, country lots and along concession roads, with small hamlets such as Rosedale, Numogate and Kilmarnock. There is very little heavy industry, so most of the air quality story is rural.
Dairy, beef and cash-crop farms put dust and odour into the air at planting, haying and harvest time, and the gravel roads that cross the township throw up dust in every dry spell. Ragweed and grass pollen are heavy along field edges in late summer. The low ground along the Rideau and the township's swamps and creeks keeps humidity high from June to September, which means mould spores in the air and damp basements in older farmhouses.
Heating is the other big factor. Without natural gas on most roads, Montague homes rely heavily on wood, oil and propane. Wood stoves and outdoor wood furnaces add smoke on cold mornings, and an older oil furnace that is due for a tune-up can leave fine soot in the ducts. Add the wildfire smoke that has drifted through eastern Ontario in recent summers, and a well-chosen pleated filter does a lot of work here.
Montague Township climate, homes & HVAC systems
Montague has a cold continental climate with long, snowy winters and short, warm summers. Open fields leave homes exposed to the wind, so furnaces and heat pumps run hard from October through April. More homeowners now add central air or ducted heat pumps to handle the humid weeks of July and August.
Housing is overwhelmingly rural: century farmhouses, 1970s and 1980s bungalows and raised ranches, modular and manufactured homes, and newer country builds, almost all on drilled wells and septic. Typical systems are oil or propane forced-air furnaces, wood or wood-oil combination furnaces, electric baseboards with a wood stove, and increasingly cold-climate heat pumps with fossil-fuel backup. Rideau River cottages and seasonal homes often use wood stoves and ductless mini-splits.
MERV 8–11 for farm dust, MERV 13 for wood heat & allergies
For homes near barns or gravel roads, a pleated MERV 8 or MERV 11 filter catches heavy dust without restricting older oil and propane furnaces. If you heat with wood or anyone has asthma, use MERV 13 – ideally in a 4-inch filter – and change it on schedule.

- Spring: Replace the filter after mud season, when gravel roads dry out and field work begins.
- Summer: Keep a MERV 13 handy for haying weeks and smoke advisories, and dehumidify damp basements.
- Fall: Change the filter and book your oil or propane furnace tune-up before the heating season.
- Winter: Check monthly if you burn wood – soot and ash clog filters faster than any other source.
Which MERV rating is right for your Montague Township home?
MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) measures how well a filter captures particles of different sizes under the ASHRAE 52.2 test standard. Higher numbers catch smaller particles. Most residential furnaces in Canada run well on MERV 8 to MERV 13 – here is how to choose:
| Rating | What it captures | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| MERV 8 | Dust, lint, pollen, mould spores and larger particles (3–10 microns) | Budget-friendly everyday protection, rental units, new-build dust |
| MERV 11 | Everything MERV 8 does plus pet dander, fine dust and some smoke (1–3 microns) | Most family homes, pets, seasonal allergies |
| MERV 13 | Fine particles down to 0.3–1 micron, including much of the PM2.5 in wildfire smoke | Asthma, allergies, wildfire smoke, newborns and seniors |
Not sure? Read our complete MERV rating guide. If you are moving up to MERV 13 on an older furnace, a deeper 2-inch or 4-inch filter keeps airflow healthy.
Popular furnace filter sizes in Montague Township
Oil, propane and combination wood-oil furnaces in rural Montague most often take 1-inch filters like 16x25x1 or 20x20x1. Older or unusual units may need a special size, and washable filters suit some workshops.
How often to change your furnace filter in Montague Township
| Filter depth | Typical home | Pets, allergies or smoke |
|---|---|---|
| 1-inch | Every 1–3 months | Every 30–45 days |
| 2-inch | Every 3–4 months | Every 2 months |
| 4-inch | Every 6–9 months | Every 4–6 months |
| 5-inch | Every 9–12 months | Every 6 months |
Farm homes, workshops and houses on gravel roads should check filters every month – dust loads them far faster than in town. See the full filter changing guide.

Montague's businesses are mostly rural: dairy and livestock farms, cash-crop operations, contractors and trades yards, small engine and auto repair shops, home-based businesses and the township's municipal and community buildings. Shops and barns with unit heaters or forced-air systems deal with heavy dust, and the right filter protects both equipment and the people working there.

Montague Township air filter FAQ
What filter works best for an oil furnace in Montague?
A pleated MERV 8 or MERV 11 filter is a good match for most oil furnaces. Change it every 1–3 months and keep up with the annual tune-up so soot doesn't build up in your ducts.
I have a wood-oil combination furnace – does it need a filter?
Yes. Most combination furnaces have a standard filter slot on the return side. Because wood burning adds ash and smoke, check the filter monthly through winter and replace it when it turns grey.
Can a furnace filter reduce farm dust in the house?
Yes – pleated filters trap a large share of the field, barn and road dust that gets tracked or blown inside. Homes beside working fields should check filters monthly in spring and fall.
Will a filter fix musty air in an old farmhouse?
A filter traps mould spores but can't remove moisture. Combine a fresh filter with a dehumidifier and good basement drainage; a carbon pleated filter helps with odours.
Does Montague get wildfire smoke?
Yes. Smoke from Quebec and northern Ontario fires has reached Lanark County in recent summers. A MERV 13 filter and a closed-up house are the best defence on advisory days.
